Johnson & Johnson company was founded in 1886. The company initially focused on producing sterile surgical dressings and sutures, setting new standards for cleanliness and quality in the medical industry.

In 1919, the company opened the Gilmour Plant near Montreal, its first factory outside of the United States. Further, in the 1930s, the company expanded operations to Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and South Africa.

In 2013, the company acquired Aragon Pharmaceuticals, Inc., and in 2014, the company acquired Alios BioPharma, Inc.

Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries (the Company) have approximately 131,900 employees worldwide engaged in the research and development, manufacture, and sale of a broad range of products in the healthcare field.  The Company conducts business in virtually all countries of the world with the primary focus on products related to human health and well-being.
Currently, the company is operating under two business segments: Innovative Medicine and MedTech. The Innovative Medicine segment is focused on the following therapeutic areas: Immunology (e.g., rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis), Infectious Diseases (e.g., HIV/AIDS), Neuroscience (e.g., mood disorders, neurodegenerative disorders and schizophrenia), Oncology (e.g., prostate cancer, hematologic malignancies, lung cancer and bladder cancer), Cardiovascular and Metabolism (e.g., thrombosis, diabetes and macular degeneration) and Pulmonary Hypertension (e.g., Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension). Further, The MedTech segment includes a broad portfolio of products used in the Interventional Solutions, Orthopaedics, Surgery and Vision categories. Interventional Solutions include electrophysiology products (Biosense Webster) to treat heart rhythm disorders, the heart recovery portfolio (Abiomed) which includes technologies to treat severe coronary artery disease requiring high-risk PCI or AMI cardiogenic shock, and Neurovascular care (Cerenovus) that treats hemorrhagic and ischemic stroke.   Johnson & Johnson Vision products include ACUVUE Brand contact lenses and TECNIS intraocular lenses for cataract surgery. These products are distributed to wholesalers, hospitals and retailers, and used predominantly in the professional fields by physicians, nurses, hospitals, eye care professionals and clinics.
