Oilseeds are the seeds in which oil can be extracted from. The seeds are crushed to obtain oil for human consumption, and biodiesel production, and the remainder is processed into meal which is used as high-protein livestock and poultry feed. Oilseed processing and oil extraction processes are designed to obtain high-quality oil with minimal undesirable components, achieve high extraction yields, and produce high-value meals. Fats and oils are esters of glycerol and fatty acids, most of which have an even no of carbon atoms. The fatty acids found in the oil may be either saturated or may be unsaturated. The natural flavor and odor of oils are due to the presence of non-fatty matter. Their color is due to the presence of non-fatty matter. Today in the United States, mechanical oil expression is not widely used due to low oil recovery. However, the use of screw press is preferred by small processors because of its low capital cost. Solvent extraction with hexane is the standard practice in today’s modern oilseed processing facilities. Solvent-extraction plant capacities range from 100 to 9000 metric tons per day. Supercritical fluid, water, and enzyme-aided water extraction processes are of interest for specialty and gourmet oils production.
The use of large-scale continuous processes began in the early 1920s. Nowadays immersion and percolation type continuous extractors are used for commercial solvent extraction of oilseeds. Oilseed processing begins with cleaning the seeds to remove impurities like dust, stones, and other foreign materials. Next, the seeds are crushed or processed to extract the oil. This extraction can be done mechanically through expeller pressing or chemically using solvents like hexane. The extracted oil is then refined to remove impurities such as gums, waxes, and pigments through processes like degumming, neutralization, bleaching, and deodorization. Finally, depending on the desired characteristics, the oil may undergo additional processes like hydrogenation to increase stability or fractionation to separate different components. The resulting oil is then ready for various applications, including cooking, biodiesel production, and industrial uses. Oilseeds processing is a meticulously orchestrated series of steps, akin to an intricate culinary masterpiece. It commences with the meticulous cleaning of seeds, akin to purifying them for a royal banquet. Following this meticulous preparation, the seeds transform akin to being pressed and squeezed in the grand winepress, extracting the precious oils they hold within. This extraction process may take on different forms: the gentle embrace of mechanical pressing or the potent alchemy of chemical solvents like hexane, each method yielding its nuances of flavor and quality. Once liberated, the oils embark on a journey through the refining chambers, akin to passing through the halls of alchemy. Here impurities are stripped away with precision akin to separating the impurities from gold. For some oils, there lies beyond the refining chambers an additional realm of transformation. Hydrogenation may beckon, inviting certain oils to undergo a metamorphosis, rendering them more stable and resistant to spoilage. Meanwhile, fractionation may beckon others, enticing them to unravel their molecular secrets and reveal their distinct components.
A broad range of valuable bioactive compounds has been obtained from oilseeds either in pure form or in a homogenous mixture. Oilseed cakes or meals had been undervalued by-products or waste, which conventionally had been utilized for feed in many countries. Oilseed meals are valuable for animal consumption because of their abundant energy, protein, vitamins and minerals, etc. Oilseeds are highly valuable plant-based products containing an elevated level of essential oils and other food fats. Oilseed meals or cakes are utilized as protein isolates, hydrolysates, and bioactive peptides. Oilseeds are nutrient-rich and can be a superior segment of the human diet. Peanuts, soybeans, sesame seeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, and kenaf seeds are important examples of oilseeds and contain essential micronutrients for the normal functioning of the nervous and digestive systems. One of the cost-free uses of oilseed meal is its utilization as plant compost which requires no processing. By considering all of these, entrepreneurs are interested in the commercialization of natural agro-waste or by-products. Furthermore, these oilseeds are also beneficial in reducing diseases like atherosclerosis, oxidative stress cardiovascular, etc. Some oils are not exactly edible oils it are also well-known medicines in the healthcare Ayurveda system.
• For instance, mustard is also used for joint and muscular problems and therapeutic massages, and in combination with turmeric and garlic is utilized for joint pains and rheumatism.

The production, processing, and use of oilseeds and their products are influenced by trade regulations, biofuel mandates, funding for research and development, and incentives for oilseed farming. Oilseed Processing Market is influenced by government programs, subsidies, and policies that promote food security, renewable energy, and agriculture. The relationship between government policy and agricultural supply requires analysis on multiple levels. The approaches taken by the government to agricultural production are shaped by ideas of economic development, economic interests, and the prescriptions and requirements of international agencies. Government policies and programs have attempted to shift agricultural production in some way, whether this means policies to enhance crop production, induce crop substitution or shift to some other type of employment. Agricultural production has been deeply transformed by the forces of globalization. On the one hand, export-driven agricultural production has significantly increased access to agricultural commodities in inhospitable environments
• For instance, The Government has been implementing a Centrally Sponsored Scheme viz., National Food Security Mission- Oilseeds & Oil Palm (NFSM-OS&OP) from 2020-22 to augment the availability of edible oils by increasing the production and productivity of nine oilseed crops and area expansion under Oil Palm & Tree Borne Oilseeds in the country.
(Source:https://pib.gov.in/PressReleasePage.aspx?PRID=2004514)
• For instance, To increase the production and productivity of oilseeds from an average production of 29.79 million tonnes and productivity of 1122 kg/ha obtained during the 12th plan period (2012-13 to 2016-17) to 36.10 million tonnes and 1290 kg/ha, respectively by end of 2019-20.

The processing of oilseeds entails substantial input costs, which comprise the cost of energy, labor, transportation, and raw materials (soybeans, rapeseed, and sunflower seeds). The profitability and competitiveness of oilseed processing operations can be impacted by input cost variability, particularly when it comes to changes in the price of raw materials. The analysis showed that there exists a positive and statistically significant relationship between labor cost and seed cost with yield. The fertilizer cost does not reflect much insignificance to the yield. The farmers are not satisfied with most of the inputs, especially the fertilizers and pesticides, followed by weedicides. In general, the high input cost, the effect of changing climatic conditions, and the lack of irrigation facilities impact the yield of the dis-satisfying farmers., improving the input’s quality, and encouraging awareness of farmers through training programs improving the irrigation facilities are important suggestions from farmers to improve oilseed yield. Also, When trying to enter foreign markets, oilseed processors may run into regulatory obstacles, tariffs, import quotas, and trade barriers. Protectionist policies, trade disputes, and sanitary and phytosanitary regulations can impede the entry of oilseed-derived products into markets and restrict their export potential.
Global Oilseed Processing Equipment Market Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the global Oilseed Processing Equipment market size is estimated to be worth US$ xx million in 2024 and is forecast to a readjusted size of US$ xx million by 2031 with a CAGR of during the review period. Covid-19 has changed our world as few incidents have. Some short-term impacts (e.g. biofuel demand and commodity price declines) were followed by quick recoveries. Some medium-term impacts could be mitigated by the availability of a vaccine (e.g. travel restrictions) or are recession-induced (e.g. negative impacts on feed demand from a potential slowdown in meat consumption in the developing world). However, some long-term impacts could cause structural changes that require businesses to make strategic changes. The pandemic put never-seen-before stress on global supply chains, with companies facing demand uncertainties, lengthy supplier delays, logistics challenges, and operational concerns due to a lack of inputs. But consequently, companies also realized the importance of balancing cost-effectiveness with operational flexibility. The ongoing political and economic uncertainty in Eastern Europe caused by the Russia-Ukraine Conflict and its potential implications for demand-supply balances, pressure on pricing variants, and import/export and trading. Around the world identified seven areas of major, long-term change for the sector: Increased government intervention; changes in consumer behavior; increased food security concerns; declining biofuel demand; deglobalization of supply chains; increasing investment in digital supply chains, and a decline in global feed demand. China has imported huge amounts of corn and soybeans in recent months to increase its grain reserves. Other countries also are employing a similar strategy. Fuel (including biofuels) consumption was already on a slightly downward trek before COVID-19, but the decline has been accelerated as more people work, eat, and spend leisure time at home, While the immediate and worst demand reductions were felt early in the crisis in April and May, in most cases, demand has not returned to pre-COVID levels.
• For instance, Global import demand was down in 2021-22 owing to weaker economic growth and extremely high vegetable oil prices. Additionally, sourcing foreign labor for palm oil cultivation in Malaysia has been challenging due to COVID-19 restrictions.
• For instance, before covid 19 US consumers ate 51% of their meals outside the home, but when the lockdowns occurred to prevent the spread of the virus, closing restaurants and other types of public food service, that number plummeted to 5%.

The demand for healthier substitutes like cold-pressed, expeller-pressed, and organic oils made from oilseeds is driven by consumer awareness of health and wellness as well as worries about the health risks connected to certain cooking oils. The need for oilseed processing is being driven by the trend toward healthier cooking oils that are high in antioxidants and unsaturated fats. Cold-pressed and organic oils have taken an important place in the edible oil scene and are emerging as one of the most sought-after businesses in the oil & fats industry. While cold-pressed oil refers to the process of oil extraction, organic oil labels mention zero pesticides used in their extraction. The rice bran oil is derived from the chaff or the rice husk and is known to have been a popular cooking oil in Asian countries. The rice bran oil usage in cooking has seen a significant increase over the past few years, and its other applications are sure to cause a spike in its production shortly.
• For instance, In March 2023, Scoular, an agricultural marketing company, invested in a Kansas oilseed crush facility for the renewable fuels market.

In 2025, global agricultural trade is under major strain following President Trump’s Liberation Day Tariffs, which introduced steep duties to correct trade imbalances. Tariffs now range from 10% on imports from allies like Japan to as high as 46% on Vietnamese goods and 34% on Chinese agricultural products, with a blanket 25% on agri-machinery, fertilizers, and processed foods. This has significantly raised input costs for U.S. farmers and triggered retaliatory tariffs from key partners like China, the EU, and Brazil. China’s countermeasures up to 120% on U.S. exports like soybeans, pork, and dairy—have already slashed Q1 soybean exports by 19.7%. Canada and others have also tightened import rules, compounding uncertainty.
Key agriculture sectors are struggling. Row crop farmers face slumping export prices and higher input costs, leading many to explore alternative crops and new markets in South Asia and Africa. Dairy and pork producers are dealing with oversupply and weak demand, especially from China and the EU. Fruit and vegetable growers are hit by increased spoilage and packaging costs, while food processors are seeing a 10–14% rise in unit costs due to equipment and material tariffs. Logistics firms, meanwhile, are grappling with slower exports and rising warehousing needs, pushing them to revamp inland routes and distribution strategies.
China, while not the largest exporter of agricultural goods to the U.S., is a key supplier of specific inputs like agrochemicals, additives, seafood, and processed foods. Many of these goods are also routed through intermediaries in Asia, so tariffs aimed at China disrupt broader global supply chains. U.S. agribusinesses are seeing input costs rise by up to 22%, complicating seasonal planning and tightening margins. While some are turning to alternate sourcing from India, Latin America, or Southeast Asia, challenges like logistics and compliance slow the transition.
To adapt, agribusinesses are increasingly relying on market research. It helps identify lower-risk suppliers, monitor input costs, optimize fragmented supply chains, and understand shifting consumer behaviors. Firms are also tracking regulatory changes and running scenario planning models to anticipate disruptions. Major companies are responding by reshoring supply chains, investing in local operations, and realigning exports toward tariff-exempt markets. The most resilient players are those using real-time data and strategic foresight to reconfigure operations and maintain competitiveness amid ongoing trade volatility.

According to cognitive market research, Soybean holds the dominant share in the market. Soybean has attained global importance as a rich source of proteins and polyunsaturated oil after World War ll. It is also an important vegetarian source of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Soybeans are cultivated across the globe in large quantities and are processed to obtain vegetable oils as well as the oil meal for a wide range of end uses. Traditionally, soybeans are first processed in solvent extraction plants to obtain the vegetable oil and then the oil meal is used as a component of different animal feeds. Baby food formulations, meat and dairy alternatives, and soy nut butter are some of the advanced food products made from soybeans. There are a significant number of oleochemicals made from the by-products of soybean oil processing. Whether it’s glycerin from a biodiesel plant or fatty acids from a fat hydrolysis plant, Crown offers many different processes to add value to these fat by-products. Swine and poultry producers are the top feeders of soybean meal, but the ratios are relatively small and somewhat inflexible, lead animal protein economist for CoBank.

According to cognitive market research, Mechanical oil extraction holds the dominant share in the market. Mechanical oil extraction is one of the oldest and simplest methods for extraction of oil from oil-bearing materials. This method involves pressing the materials seeds using a screw press to extract the oil. The seeds are sometimes cracked or flaked, then conditioned to the proper moisture and temperature, then the oil is squeezed out in the screw press. The oil is then filtered and frequently refined before usage. The resulting oil is generally considered to be of high quality and is often used in food applications. The solids (press cake) are often used for animal feed. Mechanical extraction is generally more economical when used for lower-capacity processes under 500 tons per 24-hour day, but it’s not always suitable for all types of oil-bearing materials. Also, the amount of oil that is recovered is higher than using the solvent extraction method with residual oil in the press cake typically in the range of 4.0% to 8.0% depending on the material being processed.
