A CT (computed tomography) scanner is a sophisticated medical imaging device that combines X-ray technology with advanced computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional images of the human body. It provides a non-invasive and highly accurate method for diagnosing a wide range of medical conditions. Here is a detailed breakdown of how a CT scanner works and its components: The CT scanner consists of an X-ray tube and an array of detectors positioned opposite each other. The X-ray tube emits a narrow beam of X-rays that passes through the body. The detectors measure the intensity of the X-rays that pass through the body and provide the necessary data for image reconstruction. The X-ray tube and detectors are housed in a large, doughnut-shaped structure called the gantry.
The gantry rotates around the patient as they lie on a motorized table, capturing multiple X-ray images from different angles. During the CT scan, the gantry rotates around the patient, and the X-ray tube emits X-ray beams through the body. The detectors collect the X-ray signals that pass through the body at each angle. The data acquired by the detectors is digitized and sent to a computer for further processing.
The acquired data is processed by a powerful computer using complex algorithms. The computer analyzes the attenuation (absorption) of X-rays at different points within the body to reconstruct detailed cross-sectional images, called slices. The attenuation values are represented by different shades of gray in the final images. The reconstructed images are displayed on a monitor for radiologists or other medical professionals to analyze.
