Target Brands, Inc. In 1966, Target opened two stores in Denver, Colorado, as the first step in its national expansion plans. In 1969, Target opened its first distribution center in Fridley, Minnesota. In 1983, the new system linked all of Target's locations together in a communications network through the use of computers. In 1984, The Honors clothing line, Target's first official owned brand was launched. In 1990, Target's parent company, Dayton Hudson Corp., purchased legendary Chicago-based department store Marshall Field's, making Dayton Hudson the largest department store chain in the Midwest. In 2000, Dayton Hudson Corporation was renamed Target Corporation to better reflect its core business, and the Dayton Hudson Foundation (founded in 1918 as the Dayton Foundation) was renamed Target Foundation. In 2008, The first Target-owned food distribution center opened in Lake City, Florida, specifically designed to distribute perishables such as meat, produce, frozen foods and dairy. In the same year, Target opened its first stores outside the continental U.S. in Anchorage and Wasilla, Alaska. In 2017, the company introduced five new, only-at-Target brands: Cloud Island, A New Day, Goodfellow & Co., JoyLab and Project 62. In 2021, the company added three owned brands such as Mondo Llama, Favorite Day and Kindfull. The company has 1,963 stores in the U.S., 59 supply chain facilities and 32 office locations globally. |
