  • Market Position/ History
  • Petrobras began its journey in 1953, when President Getúlio Vargas, inspired by the “Oil is ours” campaign, signed Law No. 2,004, officially creating the company. From its inception, Petrobras was fully nationally controlled, with the Federal Government holding the majority share. It was granted a monopoly over the exploration, production, refining, and transportation of oil in Brazil—excluding only the distribution phase. In 1961, the company reached a major milestone with the construction of its first refinery, Reduc (Duque de Caxias Refinery), in Rio de Janeiro. This allowed Brazil to achieve self-sufficiency in essential oil byproducts, and Reduc remains one of the most advanced refineries in Petrobras' network to this day.
  • Over the decades, Petrobras expanded its activities to include renewable energy, demonstrating a growing commitment to sustainability. In Macau, Rio Grande do Norte, the company installed its first pilot-scale wind park, consisting of three 600 kW air generators capable of supplying energy to a town of 10,000 residents. This project replaced older systems that relied on diesel pumps, significantly reducing CO? emissions. In 2024, Petrobras was honored for the fifth time with the Distinguished Achievement Award by the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC), recognizing the success of its Campos Basin Renewal Program. This initiative has driven innovations in subsea and surface technologies, leading to safer, cleaner, and more cost-effective operations—a testament to Petrobras’ evolution and dedication to sustainable energy solutions.

Business Segment Or Overview:

  • Petrobras operates through three main business segments that reflect its broad scope across the energy value chain. The Exploration & Production (E&P) segment encompasses the exploration, development, and production of crude oil, natural gas liquids (NGL), and natural gas, primarily within Brazil. Recognized as a global leader in deepwater and subsea development, Petrobras has spearheaded numerous complex projects, especially in the pre-salt and post-salt basins. Due to the scale and technical challenges of these projects, the company frequently collaborates with specialized, often foreign, engineering and construction firms.
  • The Gas & Low Carbon Energies segment focuses on the logistics and trading of natural gas and electricity, LNG transport, and thermoelectric power generation. It also includes activities related to natural gas processing and a growing portfolio of renewable energy initiatives. This segment reflects Petrobras’ commitment to sustainability, encompassing services like carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS), as well as biodiesel production and its derivatives. Meanwhile, the Refining, Transportation & Marketing segment handles the refining and logistics of crude oil, domestic and international trade of oil products, and the petrochemical and fertilizer businesses through various holdings and partnerships in Brazil and abroad.
