Market Position/ History

Allegion plc was officially formed on December 1, 2013, as a corporate spin-off from Ingersoll Rand.

Though the Allegion name is relatively recent, its brand portfolio dates back more than a century. Key brands, such as Schlage (founded in 1920 by Walter Schlage), Von Duprin (inventor of the first panic bar in 1908), and LCN (founded in 1877), are legacy names in the mechanical security hardware industry. The new entity inherited a large collection of trusted brands and global operations from Ingersoll Rand, giving it an immediate foothold in more than 120 countries. To stay competitive in the digital age, Allegion also launched its venture capital arm, Allegion Ventures, in 2018, with the aim of investing in early-stage companies in the smart access, IoT, and PropTech domains.

In 2022, Allegion made a major move by acquiring Stanley Access Technologies (from Stanley Black & Decker) for approximately $900 million, significantly expanding its automated entrance and sliding door systems offering.

Now, Allegion is a major player in global security, evolving from a legacy of mechanical innovation to become a leader in seamless physical and digital access.
