Definition of Breast Lesion Localization
Breast lesion localization is a medical tool for detecting both malignant and non-malignant tumors in the breast. Breast lesion causes an abnormal alteration in the breast tissue produced by illnesses or traumas that affects around 20% of female patients. However, as breast imaging methods such as MRI, ultrasound, or mammography was conducted in small fraction of the patients in these series, this percentage is likely to be an understatement of the real incidence of breast lesions. Breast localization techniques are required in up to 50% of all lumpectomy and surgical biopsy operations to ensure correct removal of the target lesion.
Breast lesion localization involves a surgical, imaging, and biological treatment that aids in the detection of anomalies in the breasts, such as a lump or tumor. It is used to mark non palpable breast lesions before surgery. The use of lesion localization devices is required in the event of breast cancer. Surgeons must select proper technique of localization based on a variety of parameters, including the patient's age, the average time of location, effectiveness, operation, convenience of use, and safety.
There are several types of breast lesion localization procedures utilized across the world to detect a lump or tumor in the breast. Preoperative image-guided localization of breast lesions is a standard practice. The commonly available localization options include wire localization, radioisotope localization, electromagnetic localization, localization with a radiofrequency reflector, and magnetic localization.

Cancer is one of the most leading causes of deaths across the globe. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. It has been noted that breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. According to some studies, average risk of a woman in the United States developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 13%. This means there is a 1 in 8 chance she will develop breast cancer. Prevalence of breast cancer is due to combination of factors. The main factors that influence this cancer include being a woman.
Most of the time, breast cancers are sporadic that means they can develop from damage to a person’s genes that occurs by chance after they are born. Further, high rate of obesity has increased the number of breast cancer patients across the globe. Lower amounts of physical activity is associated with an increased risk of developing breast cancer and a higher risk of having the cancer come back after treatment. Besides, rising consumption of alcohol is responsible for the increasing prevalence of breast cancer. Increasing number of women undergoing cosmetic surgeries, such as breast enhancement has also increased the risk for breast cancer. Exposure to ionizing radiation at a young age may increase a woman’s risk of breast cancer. In year 2021, an estimated 281,550 new cases of invasive breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 49,290 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer.
According to WHO, there were 2.3 million women diagnosed with breast cancer and 685 000 deaths globally in year 2020. Breast cancer can present in a wide variety of ways, which is why a complete medical examination is important. Hence, it is important that women with persistent abnormalities should undergo tests including imaging of the breast and in some cases tissue sampling (biopsy) to determine if a mass is malignant (cancerous) or benign.
Breast lesion localization techniques are widely used to identify abnormalities, such as lump or tumour in the breasts. This helps in early detection of breast cancer which favours its adequate treatment through the latest techniques. It is also done preoperatively to identify exact location of lumps.
