United Kingdom Smoke Control Systems Market Overview
Product Overview and Scope of Smoke Control Systems
According to the National Fire Protection Association, smoke control system is a system that controls the movement of air and smoke in a building. This system can be made up of several different components and use multiple methods to achieve its design objective, to maintain a tenable environment long enough for all the occupants to leave the building. Whereas, the design objective for smoke control system can vary according to the situation in which it is being used. These smoke control systems can also be a part of existing HVAC systems or they can also be a standalone system. Smoke control systems can include various systems such as smoke containment systems and smoke management systems. Smoke containment systems refrains smoke from entering specific areas using pressurization, which are generally found in enclosed stairwells. Whereas, smoke management systems are commonly found installed in buildings with large multilevel atriums. There are multiple types of smoke containment systems used for small enclosed spaces, such as, stairwell pressurization, zone smoke control, elevator pressurization, vestibule pressurization, and smoke refuge area pressurization. Smoke management systems are used in larger areas such as atriums or warehouses which include; mechanical smoke exhaust and natural smoke ventilation.
The smoke control systems market has been witnessing a steady growth during past few years owing to the increased fire-related fatalities, stringent government fire safety regulations, increase in construction activities of residential, commercial, & industrial buildings and complexes, and many more. The increased awareness regarding the use of fire safety systems for in buildings and complexes is fueling the demand for smoke control systems. Overall, the UK smoke control systems market will continue to grow and expand owing to above factors. Moreover, to gain a competitive edge in the evolving fire safety industry, manufacturers must keep up with the customer preferences, technological advancements, and ongoing trends in the market.
Market Drivers
Increase in Stringent Fire Safety Regulations by the UK Government in Various Regions
According to the Ministry of Housing, Communities, & Local Government, UK, and Department for Levelling Up, Housing & Communities, UK, introduced the new Building Safety Bill in July 2022. This new bill applies to buildings that have at least 7 storeys or are at least 18 metres in height and have at least two residential units. This bill is also applicable to hospitals and care homes meeting the same height threshold during construction and design. The data of 2020 states that, the total number of high-rise residential buildings of at least 7 storeys or of 18 metres or more in height, in England estimated to be 12,500. In addition, according to the Building Safety Programme, UK, from the total of 12,500 buildings, about 6,500 (52%) are private sector (private residential buildings and student accommodation) buildings, 6,000 (48%) are social sector buildings. The total residential buildings identified were 1,500 (12%) that are 7 storeys but below 18 metres of height, 7,000 (56%) buildings between 18 metres and 29 metres and the rest 4,000 (32%) are 30 metres or more in height. Thus, the increase in number of residential, commercial, and other buildings and simultaneously rise in the stringent regulations for fire safety has generated the demand for smoke control systems in the UK.
Apart from this, the high mortality rate due to sudden fires during the past few years also led to an increased need for fire safety equipment’s which includes smoke control systems. For instance, according to the United Kingdom Home Office, UK Government, there has been witnessed an increase in number of deaths caused due to fire. In the year 2019-2020, the fire fatalities accounted for 289 in the Great Britain, which increased to 311 in 2020-2021, and observed a rise to 334 in the year 2021-2022. According to the Statistical Bulletin by the Welsh Government, the FRA's (Fire and Rescue Authority) attended 34,376 incidents ((fires, fire false alarms, SSIs and SSI false alarms), which witnessed an increase of 8% compared with 2020-21. Thus, these increasing fire-related deaths and incidents resulted into the rise in stringent regulations for fire safety which has made the residential, commercial, industrial, and other buildings to strictly adhere to the fire safety regulations. These regulations states that these buildings must be equipped with all the fire safety systems, which includes smoke control systems as well. Therefore, an increase in fire-related fatalities, fire incidents, and increased stringent regulations for fire safety led to an increased demand for smoke control systems in the United Kingdom.
Above graph represents the number of new private commercial construction orders in Great Britain 2021-2022, by region. The increase in the construction orders in the year 2022 as compared to that of 2021, signifies that the rising construction activities has generated the demand for fire safety equipment’s, thereby, fueling the demand for Smoke Control Systems and favoring the market growth in the UK.

Passive Smoke Control System
- Smoke Dampers
- Fire Doors
- Smoke Reservoirs
- Others
Based on the equipment type, Active Smoke Control system accounts for the largest share in the United Kingdom Smoke Control Systems Market. Active smoke control systems dominate the smoke control system market due to their innovative technological capabilities and crucial role in ensuring the safety and security of buildings and occupants. During a fire emergency, active smoke control systems are created to actively manage and regulate the transport of smoke inside enclosed spaces. They have been widely utilized for commercial, residential, and industrial applications due to their efficiency in quickly controlling and venting smoke, permitting safe escape routes and easing firefighting operations. The advantages of active smoke control systems over passive alternatives include their ability to respond quickly to fire incidents, effectively contain smoke, adapt to building layouts, improve support for firefighting operations, reduce the risk of smoke inhalation, comply with regulations, be suitable for complex designs, and have continuous monitoring capabilities. In times of emergency, these systems actively control smoke movement to guarantee safe occupants, quick escape pathways, and visibility.
The Smoke & Heat Exhaust Ventilation (SHEVs) which includes smoke pressurization system is an additional type that is frequently employed in stairwells and escape routes. In comparison to the spaces around them, this technology generates a greater pressure environment inside of these rooms, preventing smoke from entering and enabling inhabitants to escape safely. These systems are flexible and adaptable to various architectural designs and occupancy kinds since they may be fine-tuned according to the exact architecture and specifications of the building. For instance, in 2022, The design component of BS EN 12101-6 will be replaced by BS EN 12101-13, which was approved by the European Committee for Standardization. This document provides calculating procedures, guidelines, and requirements for pressure differential systems (PDS) design, installation, acceptance testing, routine testing, and maintenance. Depending on the application, PDSs are made to contain smoke at a leaking physical barrier in a building, like a door (open or closed) or other similarly restricted openings, and to maintain viable conditions in escape and access routes. This ensures safety benefit of the active smoke control systems. Their large market share in the smoke control system industry continues to be driven by their incorporation of modern technologies and their vital function in protecting people and property.
