A tin stabilizer is a substance composed of an organotin mercaptide or carboxylate compound, generally used for PVC heat stabilization. It has properties like thermal stability, enhanced transparency, color retention, and workability. Tin stabilizer has numerous single and di-alkyl salts mixed in different proportions. The stabilizers offer protection against heat damage during PVC processing. The stabilizers prevent the PVC from heat damage throughout the manufacturing process. Tin stabilizers keep PVC resins, which require a high level of heat tolerance, from degrading. It comes in liquid and solid forms and has applications in industries such as automotive, construction, electrical and electronics, packaging, industrial, and others.
The stabilizers primarily defend against heat damage during the PVC production process. Because of its great safety, it is particularly suitable for food packaging and other hard PVC products, where it can replace alternative harmful plastic heat stabilizers. The relevant items function better because their stability is substantially better than that of another organic tin stabilizer. It is also less expensive than other organic tin stabilizers such as Octyl tin stabilisers. As a result, it has been extensively accepted by many large-scale PVC-processing firms, becoming the primary adjuvant in hard PVC processing. These stabilizers also maintain transparency and color integrity over time, retaining the product's ideal appearance.

This preserves the appearance and makes PVC products more durable. Tin stabilizers are used in extrusion, injection and blow molding, and calendaring processes. It also has applications in molded fittings, blister packs, credit cards, bottles, food containers, hosepipes, and films, and also in soft tube manufacturing industries. Thus, the growing production of PVC is automatically increasing the demand for tin stabilizers.
Significant effort has been devoted in recent years to create novel stabilization systems for PVC production, driven by a desire to shift away from stabilizers based on heavy metals. Calcium-based stabilizers, for example, are the most popular variety in Europe. In other regions, demand for alternative, more environmentally friendly stabilizers is also increasing. Calcium-based stabilizers (including Ca-Zn) are now widely used in wires and cables, window and technical profiles including foamed ones, and any type of pipe including soil and sewer pipes, foam core pipes, pressure pipes, corrugated pipes, land drainage pipes, and cable ducting as well as the corresponding fittings.
Furthermore, calcium-based stabilizers have been introduced in the production of PVC rigid calendering films when improved organoleptic properties are required, For example, as an alternative to tin mercaptides in transparent food packaging applications or as an alternative to tin carboxylates in PVC blown films shrinkable and for candy wrap.

The 6.5% Tin Stabilizer
6.5% tin stabilizer is a yellow liquid composed of methyl tin mercaptide that is extensively used in advanced PVC stabilization. Color retention, thermal stability, surface gloss, and weathering resistance are all improved by the stabilizer. It is not recommended to use this stabilizer with cadmium or lead salts. The dosage varies based on the formulation, but 0.8 to 2 phr of 6.5% tin stabilizer is advised.
