Introduction of the Sulfur Dioxide Market

The growing demand for food and drinks is fueling the expansion of the sulfur dioxide industry. One sulfur atom and two oxygen atoms make up the chemical molecule known as sulfur dioxide (SO2) throughout the projected period. It is a poisonous gas with a distinct smell. The synthesis of sulfuric acid is among the most significant industrial uses of sulfur dioxide. Numerous industries, such as metal processing, chemicals, and fertilizers, require sulfuric acid. Sulfur dioxide emissions are indirectly addressed by international initiatives like the Paris Agreement, which places a strong emphasis on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including those that cause air pollution. Due to the rising demand for sulfuric acid, the worldwide market share of sulfur dioxide is anticipated to increase significantly throughout the projected period.

In December 2023, In Bayport, Texas, LyondellBasell's Ethylene Oxide and Derivatives division and production facility were acquired by INEOS for USD 700 million. https://www.ineos.com/news/shared-news/ineos-announces-the-acquisition-of-the-lyondellbasell-ethylene-oxide-and-derivatives-business-and-production-facility-at-bayport-texas-for-usd700-million/

Impact of Trump Tariffs on the Sulfur Dioxide Market

A 25% tax on Canadian sulfur imports (starting February 2025) directly hikes costs for U.S. customers, who imported 850,000t of Canadian sulfur in January-November 2024, or 93% of total U.S. sulfur imports. Because there aren't many short-term substitutes for Canadian sulfur, which is mostly carried as molten sulfur to the Midwest, Rocky Mountains, and East Coast, U.S. consumers are forced to pay more, which is expected to cause fertilizer prices to rise (sulfur is a crucial raw material for phosphate fertilizers).

Vancouver may be used by Canadian exporters to reroute solid sulfur to markets such as China. However, quick changes are impeded by capacity issues (prilling infrastructure and rail/port limits). Certain areas may be able to switch to U.S. Gulf Coast sulfur from Canada, although this is complicated by increased rail freight costs and the possibility of retaliatory tariffs from Mexico on U.S. sulfur exports (376,000t transported to Mexico in 2024).

Limiting U.S. refineries' access to sulfur-rich sour oil through tariffs on Canadian (10%) and Mexican (25%) energy imports might reduce local sulfur output and constrain supplies. Decreased sulfur output from sour crude processing could worsen price pressures for sectors such as sulfuric acid manufacturing, which is connected to the production of sulfur dioxide (SO?).

While smaller U.S. buyers face more expensive logistics, larger consumers like Mosaic can resort to Middle Eastern solid sulfur imports. U.S. farmers who depend on Canadian potash and ammonia (also subject to tariffs) are disproportionately affected by the danger of agricultural price inflation caused by rising fertilizer and industrial input costs.
