(L-R) Brazil's Defence Minister Mucio Monteiro Filho, Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, France's President Emmanuel Macron and Brazil's Navy Commander, Admiral Marcos Sampaio Olsen, launch the Tonelero submarine at the Itaguai naval base
Tonelero, the third of the four Scorpène-derived submarines being acquired for the Brazilian Navy under its Programa de desenvolvimento de Submarinos (ProSub) program, was launched in Brazil on March 27, 2024. It was built entirely in Brazil by Itaguaí Construções Navais (ICN) in collaboration with France's Naval Group. In order to accommodate a larger crew, additional food, and gasoline, the Brazilian SSKs are marginally longer than the original Franco-Spanish Scorpène design. This allows them to conduct longer patrols at longer ranges. Brazil is the first overseas customer of the new-generation F21 heavyweight torpedo developed by Naval Group, which will also be installed aboard the Scorpène submarines.
