A stereo camera is a camera that has two or more lenses, each with its image sensor or film frame. This enables the camera to replicate human binocular vision, allowing it to capture three-dimensional images, a technique known as stereo photography. A stereo camera closely mimics how human eyes operate in order to provide us with precise, real-time depth perception. It accomplishes this by triangulating comparable pixels from both 2D planes using two sensors spaced apart.
A stereo camera detects a subject's depth information by using the parallax of two cameras that are aligned left and right. The optical distortion of the two cameras and misalignment of the two cameras due to mechanical assembly or the like must be addressed to achieve high accuracy of the depth information received by the stereo camera; in addition, the two cameras must be placed in parallel.
