What is Rotary Steerable System?
A rotary steerable system (RSS) is a type of directional drilling technique that has significantly replaced conventional directing tools like mud motors with specialized downhole equipment.
They are typically programmed by measurement while drilling (MWD) engineer or directional driller, who transmits commands using surface equipment to which the tool responds and gradually steers into the desired direction. In other words, a tool intended to drill in a straight line while rotating continuously from the surface, removing the need to slide a mud motor.
The rotary steering system utilizes push-the-bit or point-the-bit approaches. Push-the-bit tools have pads on the exterior that press on the well bore, forcing the bit to press on the other side and shift direction. Point-the-bit technologies adjust the orientation of the bit relative to the rest of the tool by bending the main shaft that runs through it.
Rotary steerable systems have been in the market for more than five years, with hundreds of successful runs and millions of feet drilled to demonstrate their dependability. It has been successfully deployed to aid in the drilling of high-value offshore and onshore wells. The technologies have shown that with the correct drilling settings and bit selection, they may give precise results with minimal downtime, as well as a cleaner, faster-drilled hole and a smoother wellbore. As a result, there is a considerable need for rotary steerable systems.
