The global power generation market in 2024 and 2025 is characterized by a significant, albeit uneven, transition towards clean energy sources across various regions. The Asia Pacific region remains dominant, with China's power market projected to reach USD 10.84 billion by 2030 driven by renewables, even as its traditional electricity production saw a 1.5% increase to a record 6.34 trillion kilowatt hours in 2024. India is also experiencing strong growth in solar and wind, complementing its coal-fired power. Japan was the fourth-largest solar generator in 2024, but wind accounted for only 1% of its generation, lagging the G7 average of 11%, while nuclear power's share increased to 8.3% in 2024 due to reactor restarts. North America is poised for growth, with natural gas and coal providing 37% and 18% of its electricity respectively; the US solar industry installed nearly 50 GW of capacity in 2024, a 21% increase from 2023, accounting for 66% of new electricity-generating capacity. Canada generated 79% of its electricity from low-carbon sources in 2024, with hydro dominating at 55%, while Mexico aims to increase its renewable capacity to roughly 52 GW by 2030, with solar projected to be the leading source at 23 GW. Europe saw a notable decline in fossil fuels, with renewables accounting for nearly half (47%) of EU power generation and clean sources reaching 71% in 2024; the UK's renewables generated a record 50.8% of its electricity in 2024, with wind contributing 29.5%, and Germany's renewable energy sources reached 59.4% of electricity production in 2024, with wind as the largest source (31.5%) and solar surging by 10.4% to 13.8%. France's power generation hit a five-year high of 536.5 TWh in 2024, largely from nuclear (67%). The Middle East remains heavily reliant on fossil fuels (approx. 95.4% of its 1,463 TWh electricity in 2024), but Saudi Arabia is targeting an ambitious 130 GW of renewable capacity by 2030. In South Africa, fossil fuels still comprised 83% of electricity in 2024, while Egypt relied on fossil fuels for 89% of its electricity. Latin America and the Caribbean stands out, generating 65% of its electricity from clean sources in 2024, with hydro providing 41% and combined wind and solar at 17%; Brazil added 36 TWh of wind and solar in 2024, and targets 45-50% renewables in its energy mix by 2030, while Chile saw solar and wind generate a record 33% of its electricity in 2024, with total renewables providing 70%.
