Flexible Polyimide Foam

Flexible polyimide foams offer excellent mechanical, thermal insulation, and temperature resistant qualities. Pipe insulation in cryogenic, industrial, and marine applications is made possible by a very flexible polyimide foam. The foams are used as expansion joints for cryogenic tanks, pipelines, and wind tunnels because they keep their elasticity at cryogenic temperatures. The foam does not burn or emit poisonous fumes, and it remains flexible even at -423 °F, the temperature of liquid hydrogen.

Rigid Polyimide Foam

The rigid PI foams have closed cells and have a high compressive strength. Rigid PI foams offer mechanical and thermal qualities that make them attractive candidates for use as structural materials in advanced manufacturing. The densities of the rigid PI foams that have been created are mostly in the range of 40–200 kg m3.

Polyimide Foam Market, by application

Ducting

Ducting is a method of air distribution that use a network of metal or plastic pipes to transport heated or cooled air from one location to another. For commercial aircraft, polyimide foam laminated with an elastomeric film provides easy-to-install duct insulation for applications such as air conditioning, nitrogen generation systems (NGS), and OBIGGS (on-board inert gas generation). Flexible polyimide foam covered with an acrylic polymer is also used to make many duct liners. Cross talk and sound energy from air movement and mechanical equipment are reduced by these foam liners, resulting in a calm interior atmosphere.

Structural Components

A structural component is one that supports both non-variable forces and variable forces or weights. Polyimide foams operate well in a wide range of temperatures; therefore, they may offer efficient structural insulation at temperatures as high as 600 degrees Fahrenheit and as low as cryogenic temperatures. The aromatic polyimide foam can be used as a structural foam in a variety of applications, including aviation, aerospace, and marine.

Aerospace Industry

Polyimide foam products are the ideal insulation for the aircraft and aerospace industries' rigorous needs. They provide outstanding acoustic and thermal insulation while being dimensionally stable and flexible throughout a wide temperature range. Their high fire resistance satisfies the Radiant Panel Flame Propagation Rule in accordance with FAR 25.856(a); poisonous gas, smoke formation, and off gassing are essentially non-existent. These formaldehyde-free open cell foams are highly required for space vehicles and aeroplane fuselage assembly because they have low outgassing and generate almost no harmful fumes or smoke in the event of a fire.

Air Transportation Industry

In high-tech industries such as air transportation vehicles, polyimide foams have been employed in important materials such as heat insulation, shock absorption, noise reduction, and insulation. Polyimide foam is also widely utilized in wind turbine blades, helicopter blades, aerospace, and other areas as the best structural foam core material. It has a definite replacement trend for PET foam and a large market area. Similarly, in the case of a sandwich with a foam core, it can be employed in gliders where certain environmental variables, like as temperature, can considerably lessen the critical stress of local buckling.

Naval & Marine Industry

Polyimide foams are used in the manufacture of low-density insulation and reinforcement for the maritime industry. It has applications in the marine industry such as surface and submarine vessels. Shipboard hulls, bulkheads, overheads, and ducts requiring thermal and/or acoustical treatment which can be obtained by polyimide foam.
