Introduction of Piezoceramics
Piezoceramics, which are ferroelectric materials having polycrystalline structures, are a prominent class of piezoelectric materials. Some of the most common piezoceramics are lead zirconate titanate (PZT), barium titanate (BaTiO3), lead titanate (PbTiO3), potassium niobate (KNbO3), lithium niobate (LiNbO3), lithium titanate (LiTaO3), sodium tungstate (Na2WO3), and zinc oxide (ZnO).
Piezoelectric ceramics are polycrystals, and their production can be loosely broken down into two steps: the production of ceramic powder, and the firing step, which involves molding the powder and heating it to a high temperature to create a composite of particles. A polarization treatment is also carried out to apply a high DC voltage to the element at a high temperature in order to align the crystal directions, and additives are added to match the electrical characteristics to the purpose and application.
Piezoelectric ceramics are very durable, chemically inert, and totally impervious to humidity or other environmental factors. Their manufacturing procedures are quite similar to those used to create the more well-known ceramic insulators, and their mechanical characteristics are similar as well.
There are several applications for piezoceramics. Piezoceramics are employed in the automobile sector in a variety of applications, including actuators for precise control of engine injection operations and knock and oil level sensors.
Piezoceramic components are used in lithotripters, plaque-removal tools, and inhalers in the field of medical technology. Ultrasonic welding, active vibration damping, and ultrasonic cleaning are often used in mechanical engineering. Piezoelectric technology is used in consumer applications such as pick-ups for musical instruments and burglar alarms. Consequently, there is a raising need for piezoceramic.
