A tablet press machine is a mechanical device that compresses powder into tablets of uniform size and weight. These machines are primarily used in the pharmaceutical industry, but also see applications in nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and chemicals. The upper and lower punches come together in the die that contains the tablet formulation. Single punch presses are simple machines using one set of tooling where the upper punch compresses the powder while the lower punch remains static; they typically produce 60–85 tablets per minute and are ideal for small batches and odd-shaped tablets. Key components include the hopper, die cavity (which determines tablet size and shape), punches, cam track, tablet adjuster, and ejection adjuster. The tablet formation process involves filling the die cavity with powder, compressing it by the upper punch, and ejecting the tablet via the lower punch in a repeated cycle. Single punch presses are compact, easy to operate, and produce tablets with low weight variation and noise. In contrast, multi-station rotary presses feature multiple tooling stations rotating to compress powders between both upper and lower punches, enabling higher output and consistent tablet uniformity through an accordion-style compression method, making them suitable for large-scale production.
