Introduction for Oral anticoagulants
Oral anticoagulants or blood thinners are drugs that inhibit or stop blood clotting, prescribed for the treatment and prevention of blood clots, and come in two broad types: vitamin K antagonists (such as warfarin) and direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs, such as apixaban, dabigatran, edoxaban, and rivaroxaban). Anticoagulants, or blood thinners, are drugs that prevent the formation of blood clots or the enlargement of existing ones. They act by disrupting the body's natural clotting mechanism.
Anticoagulants are prescribed to treat and prevent such conditions as: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT)and Pulmonary embolism (PE). Atrial fibrillation (a form of irregular heartbeat) are Stroke and Heart attack.
Types of Oral Anticoagulants: Vitamin K Antagonists (VKAs), Warfarin (Coumadin) is the most commonly known VKA, VKAs inhibit the formation of some of the clotting factors in the liver. They need to be checked regularly through blood tests (INR) to ensure that the drug is working properly.
Direct Oral Anticoagulants (DOACs): DOACs are newer-generation anticoagulants that directly block individual clotting factors. They consist of: Dabigatran (Pradaxa) - direct thrombin inhibitor, Rivaroxaban (Xarelto), Apixaban (Eliquis), and Edoxaban (Savaysa) - direct factor Xa inhibitors. DOACs are not necessary to be tested by regular blood checks (INR) in order to ascertain whether they work.
6 Oct 2024, As noted, the use of oral anticoagulants is associated with a number of possible complications, such as hemorrhage, cutaneous necrosis, chole.
