According to Cognitive Market Research, open-pit mining is also called the surface mining method, which is conducted via the excavation of an open pit. On the other hand, underground mining requires the excavation of the tunnel and the shaft to reach the ore body. Open-pit mining is the most commonly used mining process in nickel mining, and it accounts for approximately 80% of all nickel production in the form of occurrences around the world. Open-pit mining is considered when the ore body is near the ground, and the overburden is not very thick. This type of mining is less costly; however, it has an adverse effect on the environment. On the other hand, underground mining is used to excavate the ore at a very deep location underground; otherwise, due to the overburden thickness, which is not suitable for open-pit mining. In the same manner, it is a comparatively expensive method of mining and has lesser environmental impact.

- Introduction of the Nickel Mining market
According to Cognitive Market Research, the Global Nickel Mining Market Size will be USD XX Billion in 2024 and is set to achieve a market size of USD XX Billion by the end of 2034 growing at a CAGR of XX% from 2025 to 2034. Nickel mining is dominated by increasing demand for stainless steel manufacture, electric vehicle batteries, and energy storage applications. Solid economic growth across the developing nations will continue to fuel demand for nickel in the near future. Primary opportunities involve opening up new deposits of nickel, creating cost-efficient mining techniques, and discovering viable methods for limiting environmental footprints. Recent trends involve growing use of nickel-based batteries in electric vehicles, rising investments in renewable energy schemes, and governmental efforts to increase the use of nickel in clean energy technologies. Vale S.A. and Norilsk Nickel are some of the companies that have been working aggressively towards strategies to minimize their environmental impact while satisfying the increasing global demand. The extraction and production process of nickel has the potential to result in serious environmental harm. The process has the ability to result in pollution of soil, water, and air, and loss of wildlife habitats. The introduction of toxic substances such as heavy metals into neighbouring water sources may prove catastrophic for the health of aquatic organisms and overall health of neighbouring communities, which use such water bodies for consumption, irrigation, and other essential uses.
