GlaxoSmithKline sues Pfizer and BioNTech over Covid-19 vaccine technology

In a federal lawsuit filed in Delaware, GLAXOSMITHKLINE has accused Pfizer and BioNTech of violating GSK patents pertaining to messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, which is used in the Covid-19 vaccine. GSK alleges that its patent rights in mRNA-vaccine inventions created more than ten years prior to the pandemic are violated by Pfizer and BioNTech's Comirnaty vaccines. Pfizer intends to vigorously defend against GSK's claims and is confident in its intellectual property position regarding Comirnaty. GSK is prepared to licence these patents on commercially reasonable terms to guarantee continuous patient access because it thinks that its patents established the fundamental technology used in Pfizer and BioNTech's Covid-19 mRNA vaccines. The lawsuit is an addition to a string of high-profile US court disputes concerning patent payments for Moderna, BioNTech, and Pfizer vaccines. Spikevax brought in $6.7 billion for Moderna last year, while Pfizer generated $11.2 billion from Comirnaty sales.

China's drugmakers can't sell mRNA shots but haven't quit yet

China is facing challenges in developing vaccines due to idle production sites and a lack of emergency clearances for mRNA COVID injections, which has affected Walvax Biotechnology, CSPC Pharmaceutical Group, and Stemirna Therapeutics. The Chinese firms are not currently producing three of their vaccines intended for the Chinese market, but they have been working on creating mRNA vaccines that have received some approval in Asia. Due to a lack of demand, Stemirna Therapeutics has stopped construction at a proposed vaccination plant in Shanghai. Moderna is establishing manufacturing in Shanghai with the intention of launching up to 15 new mRNA medications in the next five years and advancing up to 50 candidates into clinical trials. Moderna created one of the first mRNA vaccines against COVID in history.
