Revolutionizing Knee Osteoarthritis Treatment: A Breakthrough Medical Device
NICE has recently recommended Apos®, a revolutionary medical device that lowers pain in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee. It will be supported by the MedTech Funding Mandate (MTFM) starting in April 2024. An NHS Long Term Plan promise to speed up the delivery of digital products, diagnostics, and cost-saving technology to NHS patients is known as the MedTech Funding Mandate. Apos® was discovered in 2021 through the National Front Door for Innovation and became accessible through NHS Supply Chain in October of the same year. In April 2023, it was deemed a recommended alternative after undergoing NICE recommendations. In the UK, 5.4 million people suffer from knee discomfort, and patients with osteoarthritis (OA) do not have a conventional course of treatment. Patients are presented with a range of options, including walking assistance, pain management, exercise, and weight loss. The last option is surgery if symptoms get worse. By enhancing joint function and reducing discomfort, Apos® can postpone surgery for three to five years. NICE recommends Apos® for knee OA patients who satisfy the criteria for joint replacement surgery, have not reacted well to core treatments, and would prefer not to undergo surgery. Apos® helps patients within the current care pathway. By offering considerable cost savings per patient, lowering pain scores, enhancing function, and enhancing overall experience and quality of life, this helps trusts. Over the course of three years, clinical trials yielded consistent results: 74% of patients avoided surgery, 83% reported a 50% reduction in pain, and 98% of patients suggested the device to friends and family.
