Introduction of the Kaposis Sarcoma Market
Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a rare form of cancer that develops in the lining of blood and lymph vessels. It typically presents as tumors on the skin, but can also affect internal organs such as the lungs, liver, and digestive tract. The disease is most commonly associated with immunocompromised individuals, particularly those with HIV/AIDS, and is linked to infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8). While there are no “uses” for Kaposi’s sarcoma as it is a disease, studying its pathology has provided critical insights into virus-related cancers and the impact of immunosuppression. Treatments often include chemotherapy, antiretroviral therapy, and radiation, tailored to disease progression and patient condition.
In April 2022, A phase 2 study demonstrated pembrolizumab's efficacy in treating classic and endemic KS, achieving a 71% overall response rate with a median duration of response of 23 months. Notably, 83% of chemotherapy-naïve patients experienced a complete or partial response. The treatment was generally well-tolerated, with manageable side effects such as diarrhea and pruritus. https://www.targetedonc.com/view/pembrolizumab-becomes-first-anti-pd-1-therapy-to-show-activity-in-kaposi-s-sarcoma”
