Hydrogel is soft, water content, and three-dimensional network of hydrophilic polymers. It can retain and absorb large amounts of water by maintaining its structure. Hydrogel is made up of hydrophilic polymers which are cross-linked network. There are 3 types of hydrogels such as Natural, Synthetic, and Hybrid.
The Natural Hydrogel consists of biological sources such as plants and animals. For example- Alginate from Seaweed, Collagen from animal tissues, Chitosan from Crustacean Shells, and Gelatine from animal skin. The Synthetic Hydrogel consists of chemical processes that offer to cater their properties. For example- Poly (ethylene glycol)- PEG, Poly (acrylic acid)- PAA, and Poly (acrylamide) – PAAm. The Hybrid Hydrogel is a combination of natural and synthetic hydrogel. It offers characteristics of both hydrogels in one product. Hydrogel is used in medicines, biotechnology, other fields such as drug delivery, wound care, tissue engineering, cosmetics, water treatment, and food processing.
Hydrogel is a polymeric material with high water absorption capacity, biocompatibility, and capacity to swell, and collapse based on hydrogen level. Despite advantages, limited mechanical strength, difficulty in monitoring drug loading and release, poor long-term stability, and potential biocompatibility issues are the challenges faced by the Hydrogel Market.
Hydrogel consists of a three-layer polymer network or chain that includes Chitosan, Polyvinyl Alcohol, and Polyaniline with the copper substitute. These properties of the hydrogel are useful in reducing microplastics by binding them together and degrading them with the help of ultraviolet (UV) light. For instance, in 2024, researchers have developed novel or sustainable hydrogel which consists of three polymers. It can help to remove different microplastics from water based on its concentration at different pH levels of water at different temperatures.
Hydrogels are used in many factors of the biomedical industry such as bone cement in orthopedics, therapeutic administration, intraocular lenses, contact lenses, tissue scaffolds in medicines, and wound dressing. For instance, in 2025, scientists have developed a self-healing hydrogel that imitates the quality of human skin. This can repair itself up to 90% in 4 hours and restore in 24 hours. This offers new potential for wound care, regenerative medicine, and artificial technologies.
Also, hydrogel is helpful in healing skin lesions in diabetics. For instance, in 2023, Brazil has most of the diabetic cases and it is growing year by year. Brazilian people suffer from metabolic changes due to decreasing insulin secretion and action leads to poor wound healing. Therefore, the researchers have discovered the low-cost anti-inflammatory hydrogel that can be used for healing of skin lesion in diabetics.
The hydrogel can be used in agriculture in improving water retention by acting as reservoir in soil. This water availability helps to reduce the need for often irrigation. Hydrogels are used to capture fertilizers and it slowly release the fertilizers and other nutrients. So, it helps in nutrient delivery. Hydrogel helps plants withstand droughts by providing balanced supply of water in arid and semi-arid regions. Hydrogen coatings are useful to protect the seeds from environmental conditions such as heat, drought and it provides moisture in the germination period. For example- India is facing the problem of low production due to variable rainfall that leads to droughts. Now, the novel soil conditioner Hydrogel is used to increase water holding capacity of soil and decrease water requirement of crop. It also reduces the frequent use of fertilizers. Therefore, increasing use of Hydrogel in different factors boosts the Hydrogel Market.
Hydrogel is a polymeric material with absorption capability, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. The hydrogel is widely used in medicines, agriculture, tissue engineering, drug delivery, wound dressings, and artificial skin. These applications need a wide range of production of hydrogel in the market.
The complexity and cost related to large-scale production by maintaining its properties and performance are major hurdles in the manufacturing process of the hydrogel in the market. It includes developing efficient and scalable methods for cross-linking polymers, dealing with viscous solution management, and ensuring the efficiency of processes. Also, hydrogel needs to be designed for specific applications which can involve optimizing drug release profiles, achieving desired mechanical properties, or ensuring biocompatibility. Hydrogel manufacturing processes include different like precursor preparation, cross-linking, and washing, etc. which can be time-consuming and difficult to scale up. These complex processes need high production costs which hampers the growth of commercialization and the hydrogel market. Therefore, the complexity and cost related to manufacturing processes may hinder the growth of the Hydrogel Market.

According to Cognitive Market Research, North America emerged as the dominant region in the hydrogel market due to the rise in the need for hydrates in a variety of industries, including biological sciences, transplantation, farming, and healthcare. North America's advanced nations have witnessed significant expansion in the market for personal grooming, sanitation, and medical necessities like tissue paper, sanitizer, and cloth diapers due to rising interest in these areas.
For instance, in 2025, Alphyn Biologics launched Zabalafin Hydrogel which is used to treat mild to moderate atopic dermatitis (AD). This is the first therapy for AD that accounts the bacterial and immune-inflammatory aspects of the disease. It first-in-class complex single-source botanic agent with multiple bioactive compounds that provide multiple mechanisms such as antibacterial, anti-pruritic, and anti-inflammatory.
Also, in 2025, researchers from Mass General Brigham developed a hydrogel to improve drug delivery for post-traumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA). This hydrogel offers sustained medication release under joint movements. This hydrogel helps to reduce the need for injections. This development will be beneficial for athletes, military personnel, and young adults for recovery of joint injuries.
Asia-Pacific stands out as the fastest-growing region in the hydrogel market because of expanding populations and corresponding financial security. The Asia-Pacific region's burgeoning economies, with their growing spending power and advances in technology, are expected to propel the hydrogel industry.
For instance, In India, Hydrogel is used in the agricultural sector for water retention and soil conditioning. It helps in maintaining water availability to reduce frequent irrigation. It holds the fertilizers and release it and other nutrients slowly in the soil which leads to reduction in the use of fertilizers.
For example- Recently, India faces the challenge of rapid changes in climate conditions lead to rainfall, and drought conditions due to global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, etc. It affects the production of agriculture in India. This results in low productivity. Therefore, India has decided to use novel hydrogel in agriculture. It will act as an anti-drought mechanism and reduce the frequent use of fertilizers.
Hydrogel is also used in the biomedicine industry for wound care and drug delivery. Hydrogels are used in wound dressing to promote healing and provide moisture. It is used to control drug delivery by allowing efficient medication administration. It can help in tissue generation. It is used in the production of soft contact lenses. It can be used in different lubricants. Recently, India is progressing in the Hydrogel market by using it for various disease treatments.
For example- Researchers from IIT Guwahati in collaboration with Bose Institute of Kolkata have invented the injectable hydrogel for localised breast cancer treatment. This system enables the specific amount of delivery of anti-cancer drugs to tumour sites by reducing side effects of treatments such as Chemotherapy.
