In March 2024, the Valdecanas pumped storage scheme in Caceres, Spain, was approved by the Ministry of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. It would consist of a combined capacity of 275 MW, involving a hybrid power plant made up of hydro generator units and a 15 MW battery. This battery can supply 7.5 MWh of power once it is charged to capacity. The hydro and battery would provide an energy reserve of 210 GWh.

February 2024 - In a bid to enhance the efficiency of existing hydropower plants, the DOE chose 46 hydroelectricity power projects in 19 states to receive incentive payments of a maximum of USD 71.5 million. This is the highest investment in hydroelectric facilities made by the DOE and is overseen by the Grid Deployment Office using money provided by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

In 2022, GE Renewable Energy collaborated with Avista Utilities, an American energy utility company, to modernize four generator units at the Long Lake hydropower plant. The upgrade project is intended to increase the installed capacity of the plant to more than 100 MW, equivalent to the power requirements of approximately 80,000 homes.
