Biden administration rolls out strongest pollution standards for heavy-duty trucks and buses
The Biden administration has implemented the strongest federal tailpipe standards for cars, including buses, commercial vans, and freight trucks. The new rules aim to push the industry towards zero-emission technology and are technology-neutral, allowing manufacturers to meet the standards using advanced internal combustion engine vehicles, hybrid vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, battery electric vehicles, and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the changes will cut 1 billion tons of planet-warming pollution by 2055. However, the rule won't necessarily lead to more electric heavy-duty trucks on the road in the coming years. By the early 2030s, EPA modeling predicts 12-25% of the biggest freight trucks will be zero-emissions vehicles, while smaller classes could see closer to 40%.
