Unilever’s Brand Hellmann’s Cuts Waste and Personalizes Meal Time With AI Tool
A new AI-powered application called "Meal Reveal" from Unilever's Hellmann's will assist customers in scanning their refrigerators for ingredients that can be combined in suggested dishes. AI is used by the tool—which was developed in collaboration with Google Cloud—to recognise items and pair them with a recipe. Users can post images or videos of the goods in their fridge using this technology, which they can view by scanning a QR code on the website. Feeding America reports that 80 million tonnes of food—or 149 billion meals and $444 billion worth of food—are wasted in the United States each year. In addition, Unilever has introduced an e-commerce app and integrated AI and picture capture into 50,000 of its freezers. "After a long day, we look in the fridge and see disparate ingredients but nothing to eat," said Christina Bauer-Plank, Global VP of Hellmann's, in a statement. "Food waste is an unintended consequence of our busy lives." "We saw this as a chance to develop a simple, user-friendly tool."
