Chinese battery leader CATL introduced a new sodium-ion battery that it claims could revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Alongside this, the company also revealed a new system that allows two different battery technologies to be used within a single vehicle.
CATL is a dominant force in the global EV battery market, supplying over one-third of all EV batteries and partnering with major automotive manufacturers such as Tesla, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Volkswagen.
Sodium-ion batteries are considered a more affordable and, in some aspects, safer option compared to the widely used lithium-ion batteries, which can pose fire hazards when damaged.
The production of these sodium-ion batteries will begin in June, starting with smaller starter batteries for heavy-duty trucks under the Naxtra brand. These batteries are particularly effective in cold weather conditions. Larger versions intended for electric and hybrid vehicles are expected to enter production in December.
