Cryogenic is a process of production and behavior of materials at a very low temperature. The range of cryogenic temperature is from -150 degree Celsius to -273 degree Celsius. Cryogenic piping is a system used in various industrial application that requires extreme low-temperature.
The industrial applications of cryogenic piping include liquid natural gas transportation, regasification processing, food and beverage processing. The cryogenic piping process involves the risk of corrosion due to moisture or water vapor enters the insulation, which increases the energy consumption and decreasing energy efficiency. Hence use of thermal insulation material such as micro fiber glass, perlite, aerogel is needed to optimize the performance in cryogenic piping system.

The physical properties of silica aerogel blanket and materials with low thermal conductivity, energy conservation property makes it cost-effective. Aerogel blanket provides lowest thermal conductivity in commercial insulation system, used in construction and buildings. The aerogel materials for insulation of piping equipment in petroleum refineries, oil and gas plants, deep-water subsea pipe-in-pipe insulation, aerogel blanket used for easy installation of cryogenic piping equipment.
Polymers
Polymers such as diisocyanate, epoxides, polystyrene used to make cross linking aerogel polymers. The advantages of crosslinking aerogel polymer include impact resistance, stiffness, flexibility, waterproof. Polymer cross-linked aerogels improves environmental durability, elasticity, develops ultra-lightweight glass foams with nano pores with low thermal conductivity, effective thermal insulation properties. The polymer cross-linked aerogels are used for thermal insulation in cryogenic containers. Cross linking aerogel polymer used for insulation of cryogenic propellant tank. The cryogenic propellant tanks are used in long duration space mission, these tanks have increased rate of vaporization, which leads to corrosion, to prevent this silica and aerogel materials are used to provide effective insulation to the tank and the robust mechanical properties and durability, moisture resistant, low thermal conductivity, high insulation, shock resistant and other properties of the cross-linking polymer increase the performance of the propellant tank and offers effective insulation.
Carbon
Carbon-based aerogels are used in cryogenic applications due its properties such as electrically conductive, high porosity, UV stability. The carbon-based hybrid aerogels used for energy storage, adsorption, thermal insulation, flame retardation, which plays an important role and has its application in cryogenic piping equipment’s and system. Carbon-based aerogels made from resorcinol formaldehyde by supercritical drying, high temperature carbonization used for high-temperature insulation.
