Market Position/ History |
Founded in 1921 by brothers Emilio and Vincenzo Besana in the Southern Italian province of Campania, near the base of Mount Vesuvius, the company initially focused on processing local crops such as hazelnuts, walnuts, and chestnuts, which thrived in the fertile volcanic soil. Over the decades, the company experienced steady growth, expanding its product offerings and extending its reach across continents, thereby building a diverse customer base. Throughout its growth, Besana has maintained strong connections with regional farmers and growers, sourcing products from various countries and continents. The company has also engaged in collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing the production and commercialization of nuts, dried fruits, seeds, and chocolate, establishing long-term partnerships and a reliable network of suppliers. This dedication to collaboration and sustainability has been a key factor in Besana’s success in managing a broad range of globally sourced products. Today, Besana remains a family-owned business, now managed by the fourth generation, and continues to uphold its tradition of innovation and commitment to high-quality production. |

Besana Group is a leading European company specializing in the production and marketing of premium nuts, dried fruits, seeds, chocolate, and snacks. Originating in the fertile region at the base of Mount Vesuvius in Southern Italy, the company has significantly expanded over the years, broadening its product offerings, geographical presence, and customer base across the globe. Besana’s dedication to quality is demonstrated by its large-scale operations, producing 120 million individual packs annually and processing 25,000 metric tonnes of nuts, dried fruits, and seeds each year. The company operates from a 40,000-square-meter facility, with 9,600 pallets of storage space, including 4,000 pallets in refrigerated areas to maintain freshness.
The company places a strong emphasis on sustainability and ethical sourcing, as reflected in its close relationships with over 2,000 direct growers and farmers, whom it coordinates to ensure high-quality, responsibly sourced ingredients. With a workforce of 450 highly skilled employees, 65% of whom are women, Besana continues to innovate, launching 150 new products each year. The company’s production capacity includes 37 production and packaging lines. Approximately 75% of its sales are directed toward the retail sector, while 25% are supplied to food manufacturers.
Still family-owned and managed by the fourth generation, Besana continues to uphold its values of quality, sustainability, and strong partnerships with suppliers around the world. Nearly 75% of its production is dedicated to private label products, providing over 120 million small packs annually for major supermarket chains across Europe and beyond. In addition to its conventional snack offerings, Besana excels in creating innovative packaging solutions and customized products for various sectors, including foodservice, retail, and industrial manufacturing.
Besana’s commitment to quality extends to its semi-finished product processes, such as roasting, smoking, and coating, which serve industries like confectionery, bakery, and snacks. The company’s chocolate division, Vittoria Chocolatery, produces a range of high-end chocolate products, including truffles, nut-encrusted bars, and Easter eggs, combining traditional craftsmanship with modern production techniques. Besana’s flexible approach to both product development and packaging allows it to meet diverse customer needs, all while maintaining its focus on sustainability and innovation.
