Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST)

The AST segment serves medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers through a global network of contract sterilization and laboratory testing facilities, as well as integrated sterilization equipment and control systems.

STERIS AST offers the most comprehensive array of contract sterilization options in the medical device industry.

Contract sterilization services are provided, including Gamma irradiation using cobalt-60 in the form of cobalt pencils.

The offerings include process controls and monitoring systems, as well as integrated sterilization equipment, such as accelerators, product handling, and automation.

Steam Sterilizers

Steam sterilizers, also known as autoclaves, play a crucial role in the decontamination and sterilization processes carried out by sterile processing departments (SPDs) in healthcare facilities. STERIS provides one of the most extensive selections of steam sterilizers, offering solutions designed to enhance department productivity and streamline workflow.

Steris seriate, Italy microbiology laboratory receives iso 17025 accreditation

As part of a long-term commitment to supporting global medical device manufacturing, STERIS Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST) is pleased to announce that the microbiology laboratory in Seriate, Italy has attained ISO 17025 accreditation.

This accreditation ensures that the laboratory meets rigorous standards for competence, impartiality, and consistent operation. It confirms that the testing methods are globally recognized and that STERIS complies with the highest international standards. With the addition of the Seriate facility, STERIS AST now operates ISO 17025 accredited laboratories in China, Germany, Ireland, Malaysia, the UK, and the USA.

Steris accepted as first company to participate in the fda radiation sterilization master file pilot program

STERIS is excited to announce that its Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST) business has been accepted into the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Radiation Sterilization Master File Pilot Program (Pilot Program), which was first introduced by the FDA in April 2023. This participation in the Radiation Pilot Program builds upon STERIS’s prior acceptance into the Ethylene Oxide (EO) Master File Pilot Program in 2021.

The FDA established the Radiation Sterilization Master File Pilot Program in response to global supply chain challenges and to enhance supply chain resilience. This voluntary Pilot Program allows companies that sterilize single-use PMA-approved medical devices with gamma radiation or EO to submit master files when making specific changes.

STERIS Expands Healthcare Products Offering with Acquisition of Surgical Instrumentation Assets from Becton, Dickinson and Company

STERIS plc (NYSE: STE) has announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire the surgical instrumentation, laparoscopic instrumentation, and sterilization container assets from Becton, Dickinson and Company (NYSE: BDX) for $540 million ("the Transaction"). This acquisition is expected to qualify for a tax benefit related to tax-deductible goodwill, with a present value of approximately $60 million.

The acquisition includes V. Mueller, Snowden-Pencer, and Genesis branded products, which are recognized providers of surgical instruments and sterilization containers for healthcare customers. The combined annual revenue for these businesses for BD's fiscal year ending September 30, 2023, is projected to be around $170 million, with adjusted earnings before interest and taxes estimated at approximately $45 million.

STERIS announced the addition of X-ray sterilization services at existing Kuala Ketil, Malaysia

Earlier this year, STERIS announced the introduction of X-ray sterilization services at its existing gamma and ethylene oxide facility in Kuala Ketil, Malaysia. As part of a long-term commitment to supporting global medical device manufacturing, STERIS is pleased to share that the Kuala Ketil facility has now received an updated ISO 13485 accreditation to include X-ray processing.

The Kuala Ketil facility is the first location in the APAC region to offer X-ray processing, expanding radiation processing capacity for medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the region.

STERIS AST Offers Medical Device Product Testing Capabilities to Support Global Expansions

STERIS Applied Sterilization Technologies (AST) is further expanding its capacity for routine sterilization of medical devices, including the addition of new X-ray facilities in multiple locations worldwide.

Additionally, STERIS is establishing new specialized Radiation Technology Centers in the UK and North America. STERIS laboratory testing services play a crucial role in supporting these new facilities by offering medical device manufacturers a complete range of microbiological and analytical testing and validation services to assist in the registration of medical devices.
