Market Position/ History |
After Professor Harold Maxwell-Lefroy passed away in 1925, his assistant, Bessie Eades, bought the rights to his timber treatment fluid for £90 from his wife, Kathleen Maxwell-Lefroy, and continued to run the business. In 1928, Eades hired Elsie May Lanstein as General Manager, Sales Manager, and Organiser, and together, they founded Rentokil (Sales) Ltd., the first company to carry the Rentokil name. In 1933, Rentokil moved its offices to Bermondsey Street in London. To further grow the business, Rentokil appointed Dr. Norman Hickin, an expert in wood-boring beetles, as the company’s first Entomologist in 1944. By this time, the company’s product range included oil-based insecticides, timber treatment fluids, moth treatments, furniture cream, insect powders, a damp extractor for pianos, and a germicide for telephones. In 1951, Rentokil opened the Woodworm and Dry Rot Centre in Bedford Square, London, which served as both a showroom and a hub for the building trade. They also established Woodworm and Dry Rot Control Ltd (WDRC), focusing specifically on treating buildings. By the mid-1950s, Rentokil had expanded to over 100 employees, and its products were sold in around 20,000 retail stores across the UK. Bessie Eades’ leadership gained her widespread recognition, and in 1953, she was featured in The Cabinet Maker as "A woman pioneer." By 1957, WDRC had grown significantly, with 40 staff and a turnover of £100,000. |
