Market Position/ History

Nippon Steel Chemical & Material Co., Ltd. was formed on October 1, 2018, through the merger of several divisions and companies under Nippon Steel's umbrella. Its history traces back to 1907, when coal tar distillation began at Yawata Steel Works. In 1957, the chemical division of Yawata Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. was spun off to create Yawata Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. The company was renamed Nippon Steel Chemical Co., Ltd. in 1970, and several key developments followed, including the establishment of new plants and joint ventures. In 1984, Nippon Steel Chemical merged with Nittetsu Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. to form a stronger entity. The company expanded into various specialized materials, launching products like ESPANEX (adhesive-free copper-clad laminate) in 1989 and ESFINE (color resist ink for LCDs) in 2005. Throughout its history, the company has focused on technological advancements in materials science, including the development of organic EL phosphorescence materials and high-quality needle coke for graphite electrodes. In 2012, as part of the formation of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation, it was renamed Nippon Steel & Sumikin Chemical Co., Ltd., later evolving into the current Nippon Steel Chemical & Material Co., Ltd.
