Founded in 1946 by brothers Herb and Ervin Kolbe, the company began as a small operation in their mother’s wash house on the family dairy farm in Marathon, Wisconsin. Initially focused on repairing window frames and building sash, the Kolbes quickly expanded their operations. By 1948, they had moved the business to Wausau, Wisconsin, purchasing a 2,100 sq. ft. building and hiring their first employee, their brother Walter. Throughout the following decades, Kolbe grew by embracing new opportunities, including entering the prehung door market and acquiring a cabinet shop that brought skilled craftspeople to the team. The company continued to innovate, introducing wood double-hung, slider, and casement windows in the 1970s and expanding into aluminum-clad windows. By the 1980s, Kolbe had extended its reach across the United States and Canada, celebrating its 25th anniversary with significant growth. Today, Kolbe remains a leader in the premium window and door industry, committed to craftsmanship, customization, and providing innovative solutions to homeowners, builders, architects, and designers across North America. |
