FET reports through two segments, but the commercially meaningful distinction is between its subsea robotics franchise which is where it participates in the Offshore ROV Market and the much larger oilfield equipment business that funds it.
Drilling and Completions: Designs, manufactures and supplies equipment for drilling, subsea operations, coiled tubing, well stimulation and intervention. Its product portfolio includes drilling equipment, subsea ROVs and trenchers, submarine rescue vehicles, specialized tooling, pressure-pumping equipment, wireline systems and coiled-tubing products. This segment houses the Perry, Sub-Atlantic, Dynacon, VisualSoft and ICE subsea brands alongside the Global Tubing coiled-tubing business and the P-Quip, Hawker and Mud Hog drilling lines. Within it, the subsea product line is the unit that competes in the Work Class ROV Market, the Remotely Operated Vehicles Market and the Marine Trenchers Market, while the stimulation and intervention lines address the Pressure Pumping Market and the Coiled Tubing Market.
Artificial Lift and Downhole: Supplies equipment and technologies for artificial lift, well construction, production and infrastructure applications. Its products include artificial-lift protection systems, downhole cable protection, casing and cementing equipment, sand and flow-control technologies, engineered process systems, separation equipment and industrial valves. The segment is built on acquired brand franchises — Davis-Lynch in casing and cementing, Multilift in artificial lift, Variperm in sand and flow control, and the Accuseal, DSI, PBV and Pro-Tech valve brands addressing the Artificial Lift Market, the Downhole Tools Market and the Circulating and Reversing Valves Market.
Subsea product line (cross-cutting): Though reported within Drilling and Completions, FET’s subsea business operates as a distinct franchise with its own brand identity, Aberdeen engineering centre, dedicated leadership and separate news flow. It spans complete vehicles (Perry work-class, Sub-Atlantic observation-class), deployment infrastructure (Dynacon LARS, tether management systems), trenching (Perry XT series), submarine rescue systems, control software (ICE Unity, VisualSoft), components and thrusters, and lifecycle services including ROV life extension, hyperbaric pressure testing and a tooling rental offering. This vertical completeness vehicle, handling system, control system, tooling and data software from one supplier is the segment’s primary differentiator and its route into the Subsea and Offshore Service Market and the UUV in Defense and Security Market.

Forum Energy Technologies, Inc. (FET) follows a “Beat the Market” strategy focused on gaining market share in specialized energy-equipment markets through differentiated products, engineering expertise, acquisitions and a global manufacturing footprint. The company prioritizes markets where its technical capabilities, established brands and intellectual property can provide a competitive advantage. Its two reporting segments, Drilling and Completions and Artificial Lift and Downhole, serve oil and gas, defense and renewable energy customers. Within subsea operations, FET aims to strengthen its position through work-class and observation-class ROVs, subsea trenchers, specialized tooling and related equipment.
A key pillar of FET’s strategy is continuous product innovation and expansion into growth markets. The company develops differentiated technologies, responds to evolving customer requirements and leverages its international footprint to improve manufacturing efficiency and market access. Its subsea portfolio includes ROV platforms and control technologies, with opportunities in deepwater operations, offshore infrastructure inspection, intervention and renewable energy projects. FET also targets aftermarket opportunities through equipment upgrades, replacement components, ROV life extension and technical support, helping customers extend equipment life and maintain operational reliability and has extended this further by converting tooling from a capital sale into a rental service.
FET’s FET 2030 growth plan aims to approximately double revenue to US$1.6 billion by 2030, supported by market-share gains, innovation and expansion in selected growth markets. The company also emphasizes operating leverage, cost efficiency, cash generation and disciplined capital allocation. For the Global Offshore ROV Market, this strategy positions FET as a technology and equipment supplier seeking to expand its share through advanced ROV systems, differentiated subsea products and lifecycle support.
FET is the clearest example in this competitor set of a company that builds offshore ROVs rather than operating them — and that distinction defines both its strength and its exposure. Where DOF buys vehicles and sells execution, and Deep Trekker sells portability to end users, FET sells the hardware both of them depend on. Its customer is the contractor, and its revenue arrives in lumpy capital orders rather than multi-year day-rate contracts.
The Perry and Sub-Atlantic franchises are genuinely hard to replicate. Perry Slingsby and Sub-Atlantic were already the established names in work-class and observation-class ROVs before the 2007 Triton merger that brought them together, and the 2010 FET consolidation inherited that position. Fifteen-plus years later, DOF operating one of the largest XLX fleets globally, OceanPact taking three 200HP XLX-C units, and repeat orders flowing from Mexico to Spain to Brazil show an installed base that generates its own pull-through. A new entrant can build a competitive observation ROV; it cannot manufacture two decades of fleet standardisation and pilot familiarity.
The 2026 product cycle is the most coherent in years, and it is aimed at the right thing. ICE Unity, Remote-Connect, the M6000 LARS, the updated DC thruster ranges and the tooling rental offering are not five unrelated launches — they are a systematic move from selling vehicles to selling complete, increasingly electric, increasingly remotely operated ROV spreads. Remote-Connect in particular matters: if subsea piloting migrates onshore, the control system becomes the value layer and the vehicle becomes the commodity. FET is positioning to own the former rather than defend the latter.
Diversification is real, structural and underappreciated. Submarine rescue systems and the January 2026 European naval contract put FET into defense procurement. The Perry XT trencher series and Dynacon cable-lay handling systems put it into offshore wind and telecommunications. Custom projects extend into nuclear. These are not adjacent marketing claims; they are distinct product lines with separate customers and procurement cycles. Given the Offshore ROV Market is growing at only around 3.8% CAGR to 2033, that diversification is what makes the subsea franchise interesting rather than merely stable.
The strategic tension is scale versus focus. FET’s subsea business is a minority of a sprawling catalogue spanning coiled tubing, casing equipment, artificial lift, valves, gas processing skids and drilling floor hardware — more than twenty brand franchises across six families. That breadth funds subsea R&D through cycles and smooths earnings, which a pure-play ROV builder cannot do. It also means subsea competes internally for capital against businesses in much larger addressable markets: the Artificial Lift Systems Market and the Pressure Pumping Market are each an order of magnitude larger than offshore ROV. The FET 2030 ambition to roughly double revenue to US$1.6 billion will not be delivered by subsea alone, and the segment’s share of management attention is a legitimate question.
What to watch. First, whether Remote-Connect generalises from a launched product into contracted remote operations centres — that is the test of whether the software thesis is real. Second, defense order conversion: one European naval contract is a credential, a pipeline is a business. Third, the vehicle-plus-LARS-plus-tooling bundle attachment rate, which is the cleanest measure of whether vertical completeness translates into revenue per deployment. Fourth, execution capacity, since FET must manufacture across Texas and the UK while delivering a four-vehicle DOF sequence across five months of 2026.
Outlook for offshore market participants. Treat FET as the principal independent OEM in work-class and observation-class ROVs and the default supplier of the surrounding spread handling systems, tether management, trenchers, control software and tooling. It is a supplier to contractors such as DOF and OceanPact rather than a competitor to them, and a direct rival to Oceaneering’s and TechnipFMC’s in-house vehicle manufacturing, to Saab Seaeye in observation class, and to Soil Machine Dynamics in trenching. Expect continued push into electric architectures, remote operations, defense and offshore wind, with the diversified equipment base absorbing upstream cyclicality.
