Market Position/ History

Chemetall has a long history rooted in tradition, value, and expertise. It traces its origins back to the 19th century as part of Metallgesellschaft (MG), a German-based organization. Since 2016, Chemetall has been a global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division.

In 2016, BASF acquired Chemetall from Albemarle Corporation, integrating it into its Coatings division. A year earlier, in 2015, Chemetall expanded its aluminum finishing business with the acquisition of Chemal GmbH & Co KG in Germany. It also acquired full ownership of its former joint ventures, Shanghai Chemetall and Nanjing Chemetall. That same year, Albemarle Corporation acquired Rockwood Holdings Inc., making Chemetall a global business unit of Albemarle.

Chemetall, originally founded in 1889 as the "Technische Abteilung" by Metallgesellschaft, has evolved into a global leader in surface treatment and specialty chemicals. Over the decades, the company expanded its technological capabilities and market presence, acquiring several businesses to strengthen its position. Key acquisitions include the purchase of glass surface protection technologies from SaberPack (2014), integration of Aachener Chemische Werke GmbH's glass division (2014), and the metal sulfides business of Tribotecc GmbH (2014). The company also added functional coatings to its portfolio with the acquisition of André Coatings GmbH in 2013 and became the sole owner of its Indian joint venture, Chemetall-Rai.

In 2012, Chemetall’s Fine Chemicals division separated to become Rockwood Lithium, while the company opened North America’s largest surface treatment facility in Michigan and acquired Oakite Argentina. Its global expansion continued with acquisitions in Australasia, Southeast Asia, and Latin America, and the opening of new facilities in Brazil, Turkey, Russia, Mexico, and the U.S. over the years.

Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, Chemetall further diversified and expanded. The company acquired joint ventures in Australia, India, and China, while also securing strategic acquisitions like Cyprus Foote (1998) and Oakite (1992). The company’s restructuring in the early 2000s involved divesting certain businesses and reorganizing into two strategic units: Surface Treatment and Fine Chemicals. By 2004, Chemetall was acquired by Rockwood Specialties, Inc., and continued its growth through acquisitions like Wirral Fospray (2007) and new offices in Querétaro and New Providence. Key milestones also included the development of its glass and ceramics division in the 1970s and major expansion into PVC stabilizers and surface technologies in the 1980s. Chemetall’s history of mergers, acquisitions, and innovations has firmly established it as an industry leader in surface treatment and specialty chemicals worldwide.

Over the decades, Chemetall evolved into a global leader in surface treatment and specialty chemicals, consistently expanding its technological capabilities and market presence.

Product Description

Naftoseal

Naftoseal polysulphide aircraft sealants for OEMs and maintenance are specifically designed to meet the technological requirements of the aerospace industry. Benefit from a full range of approved, easy-to-use, eco-friendly sealants and sealant removers.

The company’s sealants offer eco-friendly properties: all components are chromate-free, solvent-free or very low in solvent content. The application characteristics boast good thixotropic properties (no slump), fast tack-free and cure rates to enable higher production rates.

These advantages of our Naftoseal® sealants are even further enhanced by low-temperature flexibility, good adhesion to various substrates and an excellent resistance to numerous aerospace chemicals.

Adhesion promoters: Naftoseal adhesion promoters enable you to achieve secure, good adhesion, even if you work with difficult substrates. Besides the improved adhesion quality, our one-component adhesion promoters offer numerous other advantages, like easy application and high flashpoints (> 30 °C), to name but a few.

MCI mixer – simply good: The MCI sealant cartridge mixer solves all problems that might occur with manual mixing: it ensures excellent, consistent sealant mix without air intrusion. As it is air driven, it can be operated close to the point of use of the sealant and, if necessary, in flame-proof areas. For more please view our MCI mixer film.

Full range of approvals: The reliable quality of our aircraft sealants lead to a full range of all major OEM and maintenance approvals.
