Market Position/ History

Marlan and Rosemary Bourns established Bourns Laboratories in their garage in Altadena, California, in 1947. The development and sale of the Bourdon Tube and Accelerometer Transducers to Aerospace Companies occurred in 1948. Company relocates from Altadena garage to storefront in Pasadena, California, in 1949. With financial support from the Riverside Chamber of Commerce, the Company moved to 6135 Magnolia Ave. in Riverside, CA, in 1950. Trimpot Variable Resistor Trimming Potentiometer was patented in 1953. With 158 employees at year's end in 1954, the company kept growing. An initial public stock offering was registered in 1957. bought Chicago Aerial Industries (Recon/Optical, Inc.) in 1965.

In order to produce Trimpot trimming potentiometers in Kyoto, Japan, Murata-Bourns Y.K. was formed in 1966. Acquired Power Innovations, Ltd., a Prominent Producer of Thyristor-Based Overvoltage Protectors, in the year 2000. Acquired the Transtek Power Transformer Business in 2016. When acquired in 2021, Kaschke will offer knowledge of magnetic core materials and a broader range of magnetic solutions, both of which will be significant competitive advantages.
