US FDA ALLOWS EXPANDED USE OF BRISTOL MYERS CELL THERAPY FOR BLOOD CANCER

The extended use of cell treatments developed by Johnson & Johnson and Bristol Myers for the treatment of early-stage blood cancer has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Both treatments outperformed accepted therapeutic alternatives in terms of extending progression-free survival. The FDA's decision comes after J&J's Carvykti and Bristol Myers' Abecma were recommended by an expert panel for patients with less severe forms of multiple myeloma. With the expanded permission, over 12,000 more individuals would be able to receive Abecma therapy. Carvykti, created by J&J in partnership with Legend Biotech, is anticipated to reach global peak sales of up to $7.6 billion, while Abecma, for Bristol Myers' partner, 2seventybio, is estimated to generate peak sales of about $450 million in the US. The class of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell treatments includes both Abecma and Carvykti.
