Vitalant, OneBlood and the American Red Cross launched a pilot study which is contracted and funded by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The study conducted is ADVANCE study which stand for Assessing Donor Variability and New Concepts in Eligibility. This study will be focused on evaluating alternatives to the FDA’s blood donor deferral policy, where the FDA recommends that a man who has had sex with another man be deferred from donating blood for three months following the most recent sexual contact with another man which was adopted in April 2020.
