Biofortification Market Crop Type Segment Analysis Sweet potato Cassava Rice Others According to cognitive market research, sweet potato holds the dominant share in the market. Biofortified sweet potato, as developed by CGIAR researchers at the International Potato Center (CIP), has proven to be a highly effective tool for tackling vitamin A deficiency in children and women of reproductive age. Resource-poor smallholder farmers have successfully grown orange-fleshed sweet potatoes across a broad range of tropical production systems with few or no inputs.?Many improved varieties are drought–?and heat–tolerant, improving chances of success. Since 2014, biofortified sweet potato puree has been increasingly used as an ingredient in the commercial bakery sectors of Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and South Africa. • For instance, To date, more than 6.8 million households in Africa and South Asia are now growing and eating vitamin-A-rich, orange-fleshed sweet potatoes. - Biofortification is the process of improving the nutritional quality of food crops. This can be achieved through agronomic practices, conventional breeding, or biotechnology-based approaches like genetic engineering and genome editing. Biofortification is the idea of breeding crops to increase their nutritional value.
- The need for biofortification cannot be ignored, especially in a post-pandemic world where millions of people have been forced into poverty and hidden hunger is a widely prevalent phenomenon.
- The initial cost of fortification, which includes buying equipment, quality control procedures, and fortified additives, can be high for many food businesses.
- Asia-Pacific leads the world market for biofortification because of the strong growth potential in agriculture in this region as well as the growing consumer preference for food with a high nutritional content, which is expected to drive demand for biofortified crops.
Introduction of the Biofortification Market
Humans have been modifying crops for favorable traits since agriculture was invented thousands of years ago. However conventional breeding takes multiple generations and cannot be used to improve on only one specific trait. Biofortification is the process of improving the nutritional quality of food crops. This can be achieved through agronomic practices, conventional breeding, or biotechnology-based approaches like genetic engineering and genome editing. Biofortification is the idea of breeding crops to increase their nutritional value. This can be done either through conventional selective breeding or through genetic engineering. This process differs from other ordinary fortifications because it focuses on making plant foods more nutritious as the plants are growing, rather than having nutrients added to the foods when they are being processed. The first iron-biofortified crop cultivar to be officially introduced in India is “Dhanshakti.” It is a part of the Nutri-Farm Pilot Program established by the Indian government. Three basic methods of biofortification are transgenic, conventional, and agronomic. These involve the use of biotechnology, crop breeding, and fertilization techniques, respectively, to biofortify essential micronutrients into crop plants. Biofortified foods differ from their unfortified counterparts in certain ways. This could be challenging to get people to accept them. In Africa, white maize is consumed by people, and yellow maize is negatively associated with animal feed or food aid. White-fleshed sweet potatoes are preferred to their moisture, orange-fleshed counterparts. Vitamin A-enhanced foods are frequently dark yellow or orange in colour. This can be accomplished by enhancing the plant’s cultivability. India is one of the world's leading countries in biofortification. The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has developed and released several biofortified varieties of crops. These biofortified varieties significantly improve the nutritional status of people who consume them.
Analyst Conclusion
The need for biofortification cannot be ignored, especially in a post-pandemic world where millions of people have been forced into poverty and hidden hunger is a widely prevalent phenomenon. Presently, biofortified pearl millet, rice, wheat, maize, finger millet, little millet, mustard, groundnut, yam, pomegranate, mustard, cauliflower, and sweet potato are some of the crops available to farmers. One major obstacle may be the expense of fortification, which includes the acquisition, preparation, and distribution of fortified foods. The initial cost of fortification, which includes buying equipment, quality control procedures, and fortified additives, can be high for many food businesses.
