Automatic direction finding is a marine or aircraft radio-navigation instrument that identifies the relative bearing of an aircraft to the suitable radio station by using the radio signals in the low to medium frequency band of 190 Khz. to 1750 Khz. for navigation purposes. The ADF receives radio signals with the help of two antennas, first is a loop antenna which determines the strength of the signal which it receives from the ground station to determine the direction of the station. The second is the sense antenna which determines whether the aircraft is moving toward or away from the station. A pointer indicates the relative bearing to the station. and when the indication is 0°, the aircraft is on course to (or from) the station.
The Automatic direction finding is used in the aircraft by pilots to determine the position of NDB station by identifying the appropriate frequency for the NDB station on the ADF selector through a fixed-card bearing indicator with an arrow that points in the direction of the beacon. The various type of ADF is maritime, mobile land and airborne which are used for application in air traffic control, vessel traffic service, search and rescue, others.
