What is Leukapheresis?
Leukapheresis is the procedure carried out in the treatment of Leukemia in which the white blood cells are separated from the blood sample. Leukapheresis is the process of separation of the abnormal white blood cells from the blood and then returning back the blood to our body. In certain blood cancers, leukapheresis is done to collect blood and bone marrow stem cells to rebuild the bone marrow after the treatment of chemotherapy. Leukapheresis is the initial treatment given for acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL), acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). It is also used in CAR-T cell therapy to obtain leukocytes from cancer patients and later give them back to the patient as a therapeutic dose after its modification.
Here are some driving factors affecting the growth of the leukapheresis market:
-
Increasing prevalence of leukemia:
The cancer of the blood or bone marrow is called leukemia. In this white blood cells are usefully affected causing acute or chronic lymphocytic leukemia. Leukapheresis involves CAR-T cell therapy or immunotherapy for its treatment which modifies the leucocytes for further treatment and separates all the blood components for WBCs, returning back all the blood to the body after separation and hence the market growth of leukapheresis is enhanced.
-
Rising numbers of blood donors:
The requirement for leukocytes or WBCs increases with the increasing number of cancer patients. Leukemia treatment involves CAR-T therapy in the separation of blood products and the leukocytes are modified for further treatment. Therefore, increasing blood donations increase the use of the leukapheresis procedure for the separation purpose of blood components which indirectly boosts its market growth.
Restraining factor:
-
High cost associated with the treatment:
The procedure for leukapheresis involves intravenous lines for the removal and filling of blood with the insertion of a single large catheter. Therefore, there is the requirement of higher costs for its treatment and its complex procedure. This can hinder the growth of the leukapheresis market.
Recent development:
On July 26th,2022, Discovery Life Sciences acquired AllCells to boost their cell and gene therapy products and services. They also started materials and analytic services for cell and gene therapy experiences.
Conclusion:
As we can see there is a rising number of leukemia patients and a simultaneously increasing number of blood donors, both are expected to grow the market value of the leukapheresis market.
