Aloe is a cactus-like plant. The botanical name of Aloe vera is Aloe barbadensis miller which is of the Asphodelaceae (Liliaceae) family, and it is a shrubby, perennial, xerophytic, succulent, pea- green coloured plant. It has a long history of being used in ancient Egypt. The plant is native to North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Canary Islands. However, now It majorly grows in hot and dry climate regions like Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, India, and other sub-tropical regions. The name Aloe vera is derived from the Arabic word Alloeh which translates to shining bitter substance, while vera in Latin means true. The Greek scientists regarded Aloe vera as the universal panacea and the Egyptians called Aloe “the plant of immortality.” In ancient times, aloe was used to treat skin conditions, pre-mature graying of hair. It was also majorly used to heal wounds.
Aloe Vera contains 75 potentially active constituents: vitamins, enzymes, minerals, sugars, lignin, saponins, salicylic acid, and amino acids. The topical use of aloe, that is, application on the skin was for acne, psoriasis, lichen planus (itchy rashes on skin or mouth), oral submucous fibrosis (scars and tissue fibrosis that has a burning sensation in the mouth), burns, and skin damage due to radiation therapy. Furthermore, the oral use of aloe is used for losing weight, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease (conditions caused by gut inflammation, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). Aloe products are mostly made from the gel, that is, obtained from the inner leaf, latex, which is obtained from the aloe leaf’s outer layer, and the whole crushed leaf which contains the gel and latex.
The Aloe Vera extract is a pure natural liquid derived from the hollow interior of the leaves of the Aloe plant. This pure extract is majorly used in the cosmetics industry for skin care and hair care. The market for aloe vera extract has been accelerating due to several aloe-based products like gel, shampoos, soaps, toners, lotions, hair masks, cleansers, tinted moisturizers, and, many others. The market dynamics are influenced by growing customer demand for plant-based and natural products, growing knowledge of the therapeutic benefits of aloe vera, and the plant's growing application in the personal care and medical fields. On the other hand, new opportunities are created by improvements in product formulation, but obstacles like production costs, regulatory restrictions, and possible negative impacts may limit expansion.
The market for aloe vera extract is expanding due to the growing need for aloe vera in healthcare. Aloe Vera is becoming more and more popular as a treatment for burns, skin disorders, and digestive problems because of its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and wound-healing qualities. Aloe Vera has become more common in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products as people turn more and more toward natural and herbal cures. The market demand is further increased by its use in health drinks, topical ointments, and dietary supplements. Its function in holistic wellness is enhanced, and its market expansion is supported by the trend toward preventative healthcare and growing knowledge of its therapeutic effects.
Aloe vera extracts are utilized as a moisturizing element in skincare and cosmetics items such as face packs, lip balms, shaving creams, sun lotions, and healing ointments. Regular application of aloe extracts, like aloe vera juice and gel, hydrates the skin, enhances its suppleness, and provides antioxidants, vitamins C and E. As a natural moisturizer, it fortifies the skin from the inside out by supplying it with oxygen. The expansion of the market is being driven by consumers' increasing acceptance of natural and organic cosmetic products. Additionally, the sector for natural and organic skincare products and cosmetics has grown as a result of consumers' rising awareness of personal grooming, opening up new opportunities for the market.
The growth of the aloe vera extract market has been majorly driven by the cosmetics, food and beverage, and, the pharmaceuticals industry. In the cosmetics industry, aloe vera extract is incorporated in skin care and hair care products. In skin care, aloe vera extract is used in lotions, creams, soaps, moisturizers, and others as aloe vera extract is beneficial for the skin in many ways. For instance, Aseschem produces aloe vera extract which is also alcohol-free. It can be added the shampoos, conditioners, lotions, creams, and, serums for hydration and nourishment. Moreover, it can be used with an under-eye cream to reduce puffiness, and, have a soothing effect. It has a soothing and healing effect due to anti-bacterial and antioxidant properties. Aloe vera is also used as a sun protectant to treat first and second-degree burns. For instance, experimental studies found that aloe vera could reduce the healing time of burns by around 9 days compared with conventional medication. It also helped prevent redness, itching, and infections. Therefore, aloe vera extract is used in skin products for its skin-friendly properties.
Furthermore, aloe vera extract is used in hair care products like shampoos, and, conditioners, to reduce frizz and moisture for better hair growth and strengthening. For instance, Wow’s Aloe vera conditioner is infused with aloe vera extract, cool mint, and biotin. It provides nourishment to the hair because of vitamins A, B12, C, and E, which restores shine and softness to dull and dry hair.
For beauty, aloe vera extract or gel is used in tinted moisturizers, primers, and makeup removers as well. The polysaccharides in aloe vera provide strong moisturizing and penetrating power. Also, the astringent active ingredients tighten the pores of the skin and regulate excess sebum, thus, it is used in primers as well. For instance, MARS Hydra Glow Primer contains aloe vera extract and aloe vera-infused makeup remover wipes. Lastly, the alo vera gel which is edible once the aloin-rich latex surrounding it is removed, is used in beverages like AloFrut juice wherein aloe vera extract is added to the resultant mixture and then thoroughly blended before filling it in the bottles.
In terms of internal application, Aloe may help with IBS by improving this balance, and by reducing inflammation in the intestines. Researchers say substances in aloe vera repair damaged cells in the pancreas that make insulin, the hormone that helps control blood sugar levels. Aloe might also lower blood sugar by helping the body’s cells respond better to insulin.
Therefore, the demand for a broad range of aloe-based products has been driving the market of aloe vera extract as well.
Although aloe vera extract has several reported benefits, ranging from the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions to promoting gastrointestinal health, many of these claims are based on small studies, so, it is difficult to draw general conclusions about its supremacy in many instances. For instance, while using aloe vera topically, some individuals have experienced burning, skin irritations, rashes, and even eczema. The possibility of allergic reactions like contact dermatitis has also been found. Moreover, aloe vera for diabetes management is also risky because it might drop the blood sugar levels too low. Consequently, experts have said more research is required to confirm whether aloe vera improves blood sugar control in people with diabetes. There have been reports linking aloe vera products to potential liver damage, including hepatic inflammation and increased liver enzymes. For instance, in a report by Clinics and Research in Hepatology and Gastroenterology, it has been found that acute liver injury was induced by aloe vera.
Therefore, the limited evidence on the health benefits of aloe vera extracts restrains the growth of the aloe vera extract market.
The market for aloe vera extract was positively impacted by COVID-19 because it increased consumer demand for natural health and wellness goods. Aloe Vera's immune-boosting, anti-microbial, and antibacterial qualities attracted attention as consumers grew more health-conscious, which led to its use in supplements, cosmetics products, and hygiene items like hand sanitizers. The pandemic's increasing emphasis on preventative healthcare and personal care fuelled demand even more. Production and distribution were, however, momentarily impacted by problems in the sourcing of raw materials and supply chain disruptions. Despite these obstacles, the pandemic drove the global trend toward natural, plant-based medicines and wellness products, which led to growth in the industry.
