Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) risks:
“Chip manufacturing, rather than energy consumption or hardware use, accounts for most of the carbon output”.
The semiconductor industry solely contributes to about 31% of global greenhouse emissions. Several hazardous gases like HF, HCl, Cl2, Pb, and as are emitted in the process. Furthermore, volatile organic compounds(VOC) are released with these waste gases. The industry’s high water and energy consumption, as well as the generation of hazardous waste, highlights the importance of adopting sustainable practices. Moreover, ESG risks can emerge due to the use of conflict minerals, poor labour practices, or insufficient oversight of the suppliers’ environmental practices. In the US, a single fab, Intel’s 700-acre campus in Ocotillo, Arizona, produced nearly 15,000 tons of waste in the first three months of this year, about 60% of it hazardous. It also consumed 927m gallons of fresh water, enough to fill about 1,400 Olympic swimming pools, and used 561m kilowatt-hours of energy. The water also plays a crucial role in semiconductor production, as it is needed for wafer cleaning. The semiconductor fabrication requires numerous cleaning processes. Any impurities and contamination in the water may lead to defects in the product. A large production facility uses up to 4.8 million gallons of pure water daily, but to produce this water approximately 8 gallons of city water is required. There are several initiatives to reduce the impact of the semiconductor industry on the environment to create a balance between sustainability and technological advancements simultaneously. TSMC, a leading semiconductor manufacturing company reused 67% of its total water consumption. Another giant, NXC recycled 18% of its total water consumption.
“There has been a big wakeup call with realization that chip can be attacked remotely. Previously, attention was on software vulnerabilities, but chips expand the potential attack surface”.
The high dependency of the economy on the U.S. are major risk factors for the industry as the U.S. holds a dominant share and the country’s volatile leadership can create tremble the market growth. Additionally, U.S. trade restrictions on China can hamper its global position as manufacturing hub and by the time in future, it is expected to suffer a decline in market share. Furthermore, applied tariffs to all industrial goods and essential commodities hampered the chips manufacturing industry. The tariffs have impacted the supply and sourcing of essential semicon components, which in forthcoming period directly impacting the chips manufacturing cost. The Covid-19 lockdowns reduced chip manufacturing capacity, while remote work and education drove unprecedented demand for the electronic devices. Environmental disruptions, such as factory fires in Japan and the Ukraine war impact on the neon gas supply, exacerbated shortages. The cryptocurrency boom also increased competition for chips, straining industries like automotive and consumer electronics. To address these challenges U.S. passed the Chips and Science Act of 2022, allocating $52 billion in subsidies, spurring nearly $50 billion in private investment.
In addition, rapidly evolving technology and advanced integration to electronic systems and devices that cost high in sourcing and supplying impede the market growth. However, growth in potential income and demand for technologically advanced products in the market is neutralizing the market impedance.(source:https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/sep/18/semiconductor-silicon-chips-carbon-footprint-climate)

In 2025, global trade has entered a period of renewed volatility as the U.S., under President Donald Trump, introduced sweeping tariffs known as the Liberation Day Tariffs. Aimed at addressing trade imbalances and foreign supply chain dominance, the tariffs range from 10% on allies like Australia and the UK to 46% on Vietnamese goods and 34% on Chinese imports. A 25% universal tariff on steel, aluminum, and auto parts has further strained global trade ties. The electronics sector is among the hardest hit, particularly due to the escalating U.S.China trade war. Tariffs on Chinese goods now reach up to 145% in sectors like semiconductors and consumer electronics, while China has retaliated with up to 125% duties and restrictions on critical mineral exports. This has disrupted just-in-time supply chains and increased component costs.
Specific tariffs include 25% on semiconductors, 20% on lithium-ion batteries, and 10–15% on consumer electronics like laptops and tablets, leading to higher retail prices and reduced consumer demand. Sub-sectors such as home automation, computer hardware, communication electronics, medical devices, and industrial electronics are all under pressure due to rising input costs and supply chain delays. Companies are revisiting suppliers, shifting sourcing to countries like India, Mexico, and Vietnam, and redesigning products to avoid high-tariff components.
China remains a key player, contributing USD 119 billion in electronics exports to the U.S. in 2023. Even components routed through countries like Malaysia and Vietnam often rely on Chinese subparts, making the ripple effect of tariffs widespread. U.S. electronics firms operating on thin margins are seeing input costs rise 18–25%, with contract manufacturers in alternative regions facing capacity constraints.
Market research is now critical. It helps companies identify new suppliers, analyze cost trends, optimize product design, forecast demand shifts, and track regulatory changes. Tools like supplier mapping, BOM optimization, and scenario planning support strategic responses to ongoing disruptions. Leading firms like Apple and Dell are expanding production outside China, while others invest in digital supply chain tools and redesign products for cost resilience. In this evolving trade environment, firms that leverage research-driven strategies are better positioned to adapt and thrive.
